Since the Lost Highway Universal (R1) release was a bust, and there are no signs of a Mulholland Dr. re-release (and we in the US would likely get shafted on that, too,) I'm ready to see those R2 featurettes and interviews.

EDIT: So I bought the MD 2 disc Special Edition from the UK and the LH MK2 from France.

Did I do right?

I think ya did good! :) The French Lost Highway DVD is the best I've seen and it has some great special features. For Mulholland Drive, I think I have the Korean 2 disc DVD, which does have slightly different special features from any European one, but I'm sure they're both great.

I knew you would know, Jared.

I looked for the Korean MD and couldn't find it. There are music videos on it, right?

Also, I bought the LH with the different cover than the Limited Edition one, but the seller assured me it was also a 2-disc set. There was confusion because the MK2 website doesn't note special features on the non-LE version.

Is the only difference between those two the booklet and the box?

When you have time, could you please post just a few screencaps of them? Not also the different special features, I mean also the films.

The French limited edition of Lost Highway is just the standard 2-disc edition packed with a French language book in a holographic box.

The David Lynch interview on the French DVD (and its UK port) is fantastic.

faceintheleaves, Is there a booklet in the LH non-holographic box?

mr. s, I'm surprised there aren't any MD caps out there already for the 2-disc. The HD version got pooh-poohed all over the net, but I'm seeing no other reviews, except for R1. Does that mean they all got the same transfer?

If I post comparison caps with the R1, would you post caps of your R2, too? It appears this has to be done for posterity.

No, the standard edition doesn't come with a booklet 12rainbow. The book that came with the limited edition is quite substantial. It's divided into two-page mini chapters (a page of text and a page of photos) with titles like Amnesia, Psychogenic Fugue, Vampire, Table, Out of Time, Home Bad Home, Marilyn Manson, Hardcore, Electric Chair, Hanging Rock, Film Noir, Alice, Death Valley and Song To The Siren. The book is the same size as a standard DVD case and almost as thick. Unfortunately it wasn't reprinted in English for the UK Cinema Club release like the Fire Walk With Me booklet.

No, I already have the S.E. 2 disc edition of Mulholland Dr. I bought it as soon as it came out in Italy. When I got it I was hoping it had a different master from the 1 disc edition because I'm not blown away by the quality of the DVD they made for my all-time favorite Lynch movie. Unfortunately, it's the same master. That's the reason I was asking some of you to put screencaps for your R1 version, so I would have proof if we in Europe have the same as yours or not. The problem with the master of MD is that it's just bad. The image is just not about definition but softness and there are, here and there, visible artifacts and an error in one of my favorite scenes. Plus, the dark scenes, but also the others, have a constant and consistent 'haze' effect, like they're dragging the image you know. I'm still trying to figure out if this a bad transferer's fault or is it just the original condition of the 35 mm film which defies 'definition', also metaphorically? Was it maybe something wanted by Lynch himself?

With this premise, I can't even believe that they even tried to release it on HD. Here in Italy it didn't came out because the HD market is dead from countless time.

Concerning Lost Highway, I went to DVDBEAVER, it seems a good site, altough I have to say, the MK2 version of Lost Highway many of you are praising is not exactly how the film looked like in theatres.

I must say that for once Cecchi Gori here in Italy did his best to give us the DVD of Lost highway giving us a decent transfer of the film. If I recall this right, the film negative used for the Italian screenings was used directly for the DVD but it doesn't look fantastic or high quality because it wasn't refined or cleaned up that much. As you may know the Italian DVD for LH came out in Italy before it even came out in the U.S. I guess it was already out in Canada, if I'm correct. The fact is that the picture was THAT dark in the theatre, the other versions shown on DVD beaver, included the MK2, are altered to make it look excessively brighter. Believe me, the R1 Universal master and the Italian DVD, talking about image/audio quality, are the closest to the original look. So if any of you owns it, just keep it.

Here are also my caps for the Italian R2 releases of MD (the S.E. 2 disc).

oK, this is the WORST moment in the whole DVD. The one I like to call an "error"!

It is both in the 1-disc and  in the 2-disc editions, so I guess It's just a universal problem.

Below are a examples of what I call the "trail-haze" problem of the MD Dvd! It's all over the movie, especially in dark scenes and if you watch the movie on a LCD monitor it just gets worse.

Sorry, the proportions are not the regular one but media player classic makes screencaps like this:

"Did they scoff the whole damn Smörgåsbord?" (Audrey)

"Gimme a donut!" (Coop)
