I just came across an interview with DL on The Bob Edwards Show as a download on Audible.com, so this may be old news. The interview mostly rehashes bits from the Big Fish book, but it's worth a listen. When asked about which current directors he likes, DL mentions two I am not familiar with: Aki Kaurismaki and Emir Kusturica. They each have about a half-dozen films on Netflix, can anyone recommend a good film to start with?

I've only seen two films by Kaurismaki in 2000. I highly suggest you to watch the 2006 movie "Lights in the dusk"... Thinking of it, it could have some similarities with Lynch's work. He's a great Finnish film-maker.
Kusturica is much more known and personally I didn't like his recent movies very much. I only appreciated his "Arizona Dream", dated 1993, with a great and very young Johnny Depp, the great Jerry Lewis and Faye Dunaway. I heard this thing that Lynch liked Kaurismaki. I guess he's done some homework. I don't think he usually watches many movies.

Go with Underground or Arizona Dream for Kusturica.

Yes, REBEL, I found Leningrad Cowboys Go America on YouTube (11 parts!) Very funny! Born To Be Wild with flugelhorns and accordion--and it rocks! My favorite lines--"Can you play music?" "No." "Can you drive a car?" "No." "Alright, you can be singer." The movie reminds me of Jarmusch, on the road, bleak landscapes and towns. Quirky characters. But more camp.

I checked Amazon, and all I found was VHS tapes, Region 2 DVD, and laserdisc. YouTube actually had the whole movie broken into 11 parts. With my notebook hooked up to a big screen the quality wasn't too bad...

I got Lights in the Dusk off Netflix, and I recommend it. Light on plot and heavy on mood, the low-key performances and flat muted background colors (and subtitles, if one is not Finnish) give one the feeling of reading comic book panels. AK leaves much for the viewer to fill in (perhaps "room to dream" as DL might say) with off-screen action and elliptical fade-outs, making for a brisk running time. I enjoyed it, I'll check out a few more from AK.
