Check out the main page of the Gazette. I ran across this old video on YouTube. I'm sure many have seen it but thought it would be a fun post.

Mallika Sherawat to star as nagin in Hisss

Mallika Sherawat will play a Nagin (snakewoman) in her next release, Hisss. Hisss is directed by Jennifer Lynch of Boxing Helena (1993) fame, which incidentally won her a Raspberry award for the worst director for the movie in 1994.

Does not augur well for Hisss on the face of it. But, Hisss‘ costume, make-up, and special effects teasers have generated a lot of interest. You can see from the pictures here that this is not your standard Ramsay, or even Ramu (The Factory) horror film. Costume quality and makeup in the Hiss arfe definitely on Hollywood standards. We hold our judgement though on that ridiculous name Hisss - who chose that, some assistant director to the Ramseys?

The producers, Vikram Singh and Govind Menon, have roped in Robert Kurtzman, known for his expertise in make-up, special effects, and visual effects. Kurtzman has won the Saturn award in 1999, for make-up in the movie Vampires.

Mallika Sherawat

Mallika Sherawat

Mallika Sherawat is best known as the hottest bod in Bollywood. Mallika Sherawat was last seen in Maan Gaye Mughal-e-azam and Ugly aur Pagli, both of which were box-office disasters. She has also acted in The Myth with Jackie Chan.

Mallika Sherawat’s look has been crafted quite painstakingly in Hisss. In the movie, Mallika Sherawat has to wear huge contact lenses that even cover the white of her eyes. Mallika Sherawat has to take out the lenses every few hours to let her eyes breathe. The elaborate nagin elaborate costume has to be kept on for 8-10 hours at a stretch, and she has to be carried around.

Mallika cannot drink water or go to the loo during those 8-10 hours.

Mallika Sherawat was first noticed in Khwahish (2003), a movie that became famous for its seventeen kisses. The hero was forgotten, Mallika was both appreciated and condemned for her “boldness,” depending on which side of the fence you are on. Mallika Sherawat refused to apologise for her sexy image, rather she reveled in it.

Next came the 2004 Murder, which was a runaway hit. Mallika Sherawat played the role of a woman who has an extramarital affair.

All through her career, Mallika Sherawat has courted controversy because of her outspoken comments on sexuality.

Mallika Sherawat’s last hit has been Pyaar Ke Side Effects, a multiplex movie that did quite well, and gave her an opportunity to shed her sexy image.

Mallika Sherawat does not have any other films in her kitty right now, except the recently announced Unveiled. The other movie she was supposed to apppear in, Fauj Mein Mauj, has been shelved. Hisss is very important to Mallika’s career, in that sense.

Hisss revolves around a vengeful nagin (Mallika Sherawat), who shape shifts into a gorgeous woman and goes to the city to hunt for her mate, who has been captured from the jungle by an American, George States. Hisss also stars Irfan Khan who plays a cop who has to track her down to stop the destruction she unleashes in the city.

The vengeful nagin theme has been very popular in Indian cinema, with more than a dozen movies made on snakewomen, between 1925 and 1990. What is common among all the Nagin movies is the horrendous make-up and equally terrible special effects.

With good production values, Hisss might actually do justice to the tired theme. The last woman to play a Nagin in Bollywood was the sumptuous Sridevi in Nagina (1986). Nagina was a huge hit and even had a sequel.

Hisss will be released in 2009.

How do you pronounce Nagina - her earlier role?

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

Hisss story

Jennifer Lynch says her movie, ‘Hisss’, will showcase the pure and sensual Naagin legend to the world

ENTHUSED Jennifer Lynch

She finds shooting in India blissfully insane. That’s Jennifer Lynch from Hollywood, who’s currently made India her home, busy as she is with shooting for Hisss, a movie written and directed by her. Hisss< /em> stars Mallika Sherawat and Irrfan Khan.

Shooting in Chennai, Kerala and Mumbai, Jennifer says, she has found security in the chaos, peace with the madness, and creativity in every crew member. “There is a devotion to work and a love of cinema here that enables me to trust that things are exactly as they should be. There is a strange power in powerlessness,” she laughs. “I have so many stories to tell of working here, each of them brings a smile to my face, and a sense of adventure to my heart. I hope the film reflects this. I adore India,” she adds.

Spellbound

Jennifer reveals the opportunity to write and direct the Naagin legend was presented to her by producer Govind Menon. “Like a gift you do not expect, the story and its power came like a bolt of lightning. Govind was looking at directors and writers and happened upon me through a connection in Los Angeles,” she adds. Falling immediately under the spell of the legend, she agreed to take up the challenge of retelling it for today’s audiences.

She clarifies her version is “not your grandmother’s Naagin by any stretch of the imagination, though it holds tight to the myth.” SFX, Mallika, today’s India, Irrfan Khan and “what I hope is a strong script will leave theatre goers squealing!”

Jennifer says Robert Kurtzman, who is one of the greatest special effects and make-up effects artists in the world today, has brought the enormous, sensual creature of the cobra goddess to life. “Robert has worked on all of Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Sam Raimi films and is going to completely reinvent the Snake Woman. I am honoured to put it to film for all to see, not just for Indian audiences, but for the world,” she adds.

Jennifer says, “This legend is too good, too pure and sensual to be kept secret. Good stories bring the world together, and I believe this is a winner.” Jennifer’s endeavour is going to be “to transform the ancient myth into a crackerjack thriller in the tradition of Silence of the Lambs and Predator.”

The film was earlier called Naagin and then renamed as Hisss. Jennifer says the name change was effected due to an urge to give this telling of the film a fresh opportunity to be viewed as a modern creature feature roller coaster ride “a love story of vengeance.”

Mallika’s slimy new avatar

Written by Jhone on October 6, 2008 – 12:17 am -

Mallika’s slimy new avatarAt last a director has given Mallika Sherawat the look of her career: naagin, the snakewoman. It’s called Hisss, and you have to admit she looks scary and sexy at the same time in this still. The director? None other than Jennifer Lynch, daughter of the cult American filmmaker, David Lynch. Many years ago, Jennifer had made Boxing Helena, another twisted erotic thriller. Mallika plays a snake who can transform herself into a stunningly beautiful woman, and then turn back into a half snake, half woman.

The make up effects are by Robert Kurtzman, the artist behind Vanilla Sky and Evil Dead. The kind of make-up used is MUFX (prosthetic make-up) which is a technology that has won numerous awards. Two make-up artists have been working on Mallika’s look and the material she wears is so slimy that at times it just sticks to the skin. Hiss will also star Irfan Khan. Hiss is a joint Bollywood/Hollywood co-production with Govind Menon and as producers

I was lucky to see the trailer for Hisss this weekend. It was quite exciting. It seems to be equal parts monster movie, and psychological thriller-- in that respect, it's like Surveillance. The trailer didn't really play up the supernatural mythology, but JL's Indian mise en scene seems very Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness. Very wild, very exotic. Anyway, it was a nice little taste of the mood and SFX. This is going to be a good one!
