Thanks for nothing, Booth.  I knew I couldn't count on you.

did you ever find a copy of The Straight Story DVD?
all the cds you mentioned, BLUE BOB, straight story OST, INLAND EMPIRE OST, polish night music, the air is on fire, i would recommend. really any lynch soundtrack is alright by me save for dune(tho it does have its moments), but i have to admit, for example, i love the eraserhead soundtrack. found it used when i was sixteen and only a few months into driving on my own. i aquired the habit of checking the just in section of used cds stores that were starting to pop up in the mid ninties. and so eraserhead has kind of a nostalgic feel to me. but be warned, apart from a bit of fats wallers affected organ and the 'in heaven' song, most of the cd is more or less the score of the film, which is factory noises, steam noises, machinery...personally i dont regret the purchase, but i just wanted to warn you about what constitues the eraserhead soundtrack. sticking with cds, if you dont already have mulholland drive, thats a must. if you can take the heavier rock genre, lost highway and wild at heart arent bad either. also both of julee cruise's albums made with lynch and angelo i strongly recommend. floating into the night, which is the first one, has all the goodies from TP(falling, rocking back inside my heart, the song(tho not a TP song) 'mysteries of love' that played in blue velvet at the party scene when dern and kyle dance for the first time, and my favorite, the world spins). her next album, the voice of love, is pretty good too, but is of a marked difference to her first. different production techniques BUT, it does have questions in a world of blue, so thats a plus. as does the FWWM soundtrack(again recommended, and also both TP season 1 and season 2 and more goes without saying)
i also have a copy a friend made for me from a julee cruise concert in london sometime in the ninties which i enjoy as well, but im not sure if its an offical release or not.
i have not seen the air is on fire book, so i cant make a judgement on that
i got my copy of room to dream for free, and ive probably only watched it five time or so, so if you find a good deal on it, and really need that lynch fix, its not bad. but dont get your hopes up.
i love my copy of lynch on lynch, so i hope you have ordered that. its one of those book you can just pick up and read at random yet is always accessible, like most of the directors series are. theres a few more book i own that you may find interesting. let me know if you want the info.
as to buying hotel room, on the air, industrial symphony no.1 on VHS, that really depends. supposedly hotel room and on the air are going to be released on DVD in the future(insert sarcasm here) and ISno.1
will be on the lime set. i dont have copies of on the air, but my VHS copies of hotel room and ISno.1 are just ok. very video looking. but if you can find them cheap, id say they are worth it, because who knows when they will be on dvd, or whether ISno.1 will be released on its own instead of in a 180$ box set which i already own 90% of.
anyone heard news on chrysta bell? wasnt she doing an album with lynch? or at least wrote a few songs, not just polish poem?
i hope some of this helps your lynch mania. :)

coolspringsj, i saw in another thread that you are already getting lynch on lynch, which is a good buy imo. the complete lynch i havent read in about a year, but from what i remember it wasnt all that illuminating(to me that is) and had some factual errors. which chion did you buy?(he covers lynch in multiple books) i havent read him, so id be interested in your opinion. also dont forget 'beautiful dark', which comes out later this month, and sounds like it will be a winner. david lynch decoded is next on my list. i wanted to mention two others, that, tho i find them sometime streching a bit to make their point(especially when trying to tie lynch together with freud or lacan) the impossible david lynch by todd mcgowan is heavy on the lacan based criticism, and the strange world of david lynch  by eric g. wilson, which isnt so bad except for the whole irony aspect, which wilson tries to pound into almost everyone of lynch's films that he so choses.
and which i dont fully agree with. still, its a good read.

I always enjoy reading your posts and getting your Lynch advice, JFK.  I ordered the Straight Story DVD, but haven't watched it yet.  I have David Lynch (2nd ed.) by Chion - I believe translated from French to English and it has Frank Booth on the cover.  It goes deep, but not in an annoying academic way like Nochimson.  I would say more now, but I am busy so I shall return and maybe edit this post later.:)

EDIT - Just ordered David Lynch House Roast, Polish Night Music, and I Don't Know Jack.

All of the Lynch soundtracks are definitely must-buys. The only one I haven't got is Eraserhead. Any one with Badalamenti involved is fantastic. Dune is interesting enough, although it doesn't have much longevity. I thought INLAND EMPIRE was decent, but poor relative to Lynch's high standards. I hope he teams back up with Badalamenti for his next film. BLUE BOB is okay, but I felt that the only two really good tracks (Go Get Some and Pretty Sos) are on the Mulholland Drive CD.

Is Polish Night Music worth £17.50? I see it only has four tracks, but I assume they're pretty lengthy.

To answer your question, no.  Images contains the nudes with smoke series, but the Distorted Nudes book is a surreal photoshop project that came along later.

thanks coolspringsj, and right back at cha!

and to gispurs:
if you liked the atmospheric abstract synth music(and it kinda sounds like you didnt) then polish night music might not be for you. there are only four tracks, but they are from 15mins to 20mins in length. it is a full album worth of music.

Is the Air is on Fire CD just spoken word or music as well?  Does it come with the Air is on Fire book?

The Air Is On Fire book comes with a two CD commentary by David Lynch and Christine McKenna.

You can also buy a CD of music from The Air Is On Fire or download it from iTunes.

Where is the Air is on Fire music CD available?  Amazon?  Ebay?  Can't find it.

If you like instant gratification, I'm surprised you want to buy Eraserhead!

I've already seen Eraserhead - I just wish someone on here knew any national retail stores in the USA that actually carry Lynch DVDs because I can't find one.

No, I knew you have. I was just joking that wanting instant gratification isn't usually one of the qualities of a Lynch fan

Anyone have the Lux Vivens CD?  Worth a purchase?

Of the following 4 Lynch books, which would you recommend - Images, Air is on Fire, Beautiful Dark (anyone heard any reviews?), Snowmen?

Is the Straight Story CD worth it?  Kind of a sappy Midwestern TP style theme along with RR type songs

Should I wait for the Lime Green Collection to get Short Films, Dumbland, IS #1, Eraserhead, and Elephant Man?

Is the Room to Dream DVD worth getting on ebay?  What about VHS copies of Hotel Room and On the Air or are they coming on DVD in the distant future- I think there are rumors of this.

I would wait for the Lime Green Collection if you wanted to buy that stuff anyway (and you get the mystery disc).

As for The Straight Story, that soundtrack is one of my favourite albums. Badalamenti doesn't recycle his themes either, which he is liable to do.

Thanks, giospurs.  I will probably buy The Straight Story CD soon.  It's killing me not to buy Elephant Man, Dumbland, and the Short Films because I have never seen them.  But if I do I would be doing the infamous double-dipping...

Coolspringsj, have you tried looking for Lynch DVD's at Suncoast? They usually have a good selection. I don't know if there any Suncoast stores where you live, but there are many close to me (I live in Chicago).

im still waiting on my order of beautiful dark, and havent heard any reviews. and yes, the straight story OST stands on its own as one of angelo's(and mr. neff!) most beautiful scores. tho there may be more interesting soundtracks in lynch's work, none have the same type of glue(as in the americana type feel) that the straight story does, fitting as it does to the film. and like i said before, if you can find em cheap, everything you mentioned is entertaining, even on VHS, if youre looking for a quick fix. and yes, SUNCOAST! i wasnt sure how prevelent they are outside of chicago, but at least here they are well stocked most of the time.
