I enjoyed this G-rated Lynch movie and was pondering buying it this evening. Two questions. Is it readily available in stores like Best Buy, etc? Also, does the Region 1 DVD suck because I thought I heard that somewhere and didn't want to waste my time or money? Any help would be appreciated in this dire matter.

EDIT - on an unrelated note, which Dune DVD is the best to buy in Region 1?  Just need a Lynch fix this weekend.

the straight story should be one of the most available of lynch's films, not only because of the G rating, but because disney distributed it. tho they did a crap job when it orginally came out(i remember it being hard to find a theater around me that was showing it, and even then it wasnt out on the big screen for too long, at least in the chicagoland area). but i see the DVD in a lot of places. if not best buy, im sure a borders or something similar would have copies in spades. weird fact: i have a friend who works in a psych ward in a hospital and apparently the straight story is watched not only in his hospital, but in quite a lot of them, and is actually bought by the hospitals sometimes for the patients to watch. tho i find many scenes heartbreaking, i know i always feel a bit rejuvinated and less inhibition towards taking a chance after seeing it. so i can see the theraputic value in it.

as for dune
i have the directors cut, and if its a lynch fix your looking for, i recommend this.
tho he has disowned all versions of it, at least you get to see many of the scenes that were edited out when it was originally released, and a bit more explanation of certain character motivations(mostly more voice over). so as both versions are somewhat incoherent, at least with the directors(what a joke!) cut, you get more plot and visuals that show the sad promise of what lynch could have done had he and the conditions under which the film was made been more symbiotic. to me thats more interesting.

Thank you kindly, JFK! I was about to leave work and just needed some guidance! I want to get the Straight Story, but I just wasn't sure if the DVD film quality was up to par. I assume the Dune you mean is the Extended Edition? Isn't this version the one Lynch told to show directed by Alan Smithee?  You'd be surprised how many major retailers don't have the majority of Lynch films in stock, even some of the more mainstream ones.

my pleasure. glad i caught you in time. and yes, the straight story looks GORGEOUS. AND there are no chapter stops, as lynch explains on the insert in the case which you will see. apparently this is how he feels all films should be formated for release. and yes, i meant extended version. sorry about that.

Is there DVD technology that disables the rewind/fast forward function? Because that would be heaven.

Is there DVD technology that makes fans buy the same films 10 times with very slim differences in quality or extras and funnels all the money into culty peace palaces? Because that would be trancendental.

From what people have told me in the last few years, The Straight Story has been a little difficult to find. I have heard it is out of print, though maybe not out of stock. As to the quality of it, funny enough, a director was staying at my house last week while I worked on his soundtrack and we watched part of The Straight Story as a reference to various production sound problems his film has (The Straight Story had them too). I was taken by how beautiful this film looked on DVD and sounded. I have not watched it in many years, but after seeing it last week must say it is definitely a worthwhile purchase (and no, I don't get a dime if you do!). And to the other writer who complained about finding it in theatres, Disney opened it on a whopping SEVEN screens nationwide in 1999! They only struck forty prints, and moved them around the country, with small theatres playing it a week at a time. When Richard Farnsworth got his star on the Western Walk of Fame in Santa Clarita (where I used to live), the film had not even played there, so I called Disney and they booked for a one week run the week of Richard's Induction. A bunch of us went to see the first screening, and the curtain did not open until after Alvin had fallen in his house. I was so mortified I left the theatre!

Was this a red curtain, John?  Maybe Alvin was trapped in the Black Lodge & the only way out was by falling, then haulin' ass on his mower!!!

John, your post made me want to tell my story about the one time I saw in in the cinema.  It was a smaller room, and only around half-full as I remember it, but after the story ended and the credit roll started, nobody got up.  Not one person moved, and everyone sat there and listened to the closing music and watched the stars onscreen until it was all over and the lights went up.

I was cracking up when I saw The Straight Story in the theater because even though it was G rated and Disney, there were always certain little camera shots and angles and motifs that would make you chuckle and think to yourself - that is totally Lynch!

You would think Disney would be an easy outlet for SS but I think Disney can be very controlling about rights. Just try posting some Disney on youtube. Far from finding SS plentiful in DVD stores, I find it one of the rare titles - and pricey too.
