Someone asked me via email about film night, and I gave them a quick run down. I figured I would post about it here. We really had a great night, thanks in part to most obviously Surveillance, but also John's 2002 Fest video was a huge treat. The most surprising bit of the night though was something no one would have guessed about...
The movie night opened with a short film David made specifically for the festival. It was a 7-minute film that was all performed in reverse, then the footage was flipped... just like the red room scenes. It starred David, was black and white, and had a zigzag floor like in Eraserhead (versus the zigzag floor from TP that had much larger lines). At the end of the whole thing David said (again in reverse speak just like the rest of the video) "Welcome to the Twin Peaks Festival." I can't thank David enough to have done this for us!
The rest of my movie night review is over on the fest site: http://www.twinpeaksfest.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=143

The fact that this exists almost makes me forgive him for IE. Was it subtitled? Sounds like another rip-roaring good time. Maybe I'll finally make it to the other coast one of these days.

| Yes, it was subtitled (thank god). I don't think one would be able to understand it otherwise.

For those of you who wanted to see David's 7 minute "Welcome to the Fest" video that was shown at this year's festival. It is now available on disc 10 of the Lime Green set. It's a real treat that he filmed that. Check it out (as well as the first ever DVD release of Industrial Symphony no.1)

The Welcome To The Fest video is one of the highlights of the Mystery disc.
I ran from the noise and the silence, from the traffic on the streets

We <3 <3 <3 each and every one of David's video greetings!
They're so much better than a big, impersonal meet-and-greet at an autograph signing or a TM conference because he can speak to us in his language. The greetings are always thoughtfully scripted, but the one in question was a full-on short (!)
Can you think of another director that is cool enough to notice his fans like that? David is the man.

I can't believe Twin Peaks fans who seem to have some irrational dislike of INLAND EMPIRE. To be honest, it makes me think that Lynch's foray into the mainstream with Twin Peaks garnered obsessive types an interest in his work that causes such ridiculous opinions. How you can enjoy anything else by Lynch and then dislike INLAND EMPIRE is truly baffling.

I'll bet it's more common than not, TP fans disliking other Lynch stuff. People who come to his stuff on TV, probably don't go out and buy 'The Air is on Fire'. It's like people who love Alec Guinness in Star Wars probably don't think much of Kind Hearts and Coronets; huge fans of The Dark Knight, may not care for The Prestige; people who adore Dracula, might find Lair of the White Worm arse. Let's face it, the only way Inland Empire is similar to the Peaks is there's a lot of crying in it and Grace Zabriskie keeps on foaming at the mouth. I'm a naked, spotless IE fan, myself. How can the thought of travelling to an innerworld through a cigarette hole in lingerie not make your heart leap? Lynch playing the grip cracks me up and his singing is superb (he should do an album). I make underground films on a cheap DV camera that's still a notch up from the one Lynch used and my heart bursts when I think of the barrier he's chipping away at. Him and Herzog, both running around on the cheap with hand-held cameras making that new film together. The glimpses of the making of IE in Lynch One and Lynch Two are thrilling to someone who's set up to two dinky camcorders on tripods to film unauthorised action in a back alley quicky before someone tells you to move on. You feel the thrill Ed Wood must have felt. Or 70's-era John Waters.
"Hey Sally! Hey Sally! You remember me?"

I feel the same enthusiasm for Lynch's embrace of digital as you but I think the Herzog film is being exec. produced through Absurda, but Lynch isn't actually directing it with Herzog. I know Lynch is busy with the TM stuff right now to some extent but I'm sure he's had a few ideas for further digital projects. I don't see another Hollywood based one, even though in the book BEAUTIFUL DARK it mentions Lynch thinking of a trilogy set in Hollywood - MD, IE and another. But I liked the Polish parts of IE best in general!

absolutely, absuda is producing and herzog is directing and co-writing a film "my son, my son", based loosely on a true story of a man who acts out a sophocles play and murders his mother. herzog has definitely spoken of his love for celluloid, but he is also a man of pragmatism, and uses whatever is at hand(he stole a 35mm camera from a german studio to make his first films). so even if he used super 8, id still be interested. more info here: http://mysonmyson.co.uk/. personally im looking forward to "the piano tuner" more, as i really like herzogs writing on his own as well. and jodorowsky's "king shot"(also absurda produced) is looking stranger and stranger by the day, which is a good thing i think.
