Unusual feelings you have when you hear TP's music in its context |

Damn long subject, but I didn't know how to express that shorter... We all know that there are sad and happy music themes in TP, groovy tunes, devilish ones, even country, but I want to know if you have (as I do) some feelings not as direct than those, sad, happy, etc. More complicated ones, unexpected, maybe even not considered by the writers or Badalamenti... And I'm talking about the themes with their context, particular scenes that contain them, not the music by itself... Maybe with an example I'll express my point clearer... "The Nightingale" by Julee Cruise, love theme with a bit of melancholy ("I long to see you To touch you To love you"), but that was used in the Pilot in the scene of the fight in the Roadhouse, Bookhouse Boys and Ed vs. Bobby and Mike. There is something peculiar about using that song and not stopping it, while we see Donna screaming, Big Ed falling or the climax of the fight, about using such a beautiful theme to show something violent... And what I feel watching that scene and hearing the song is that it's sad there's a fight in there, like if the fight was something unusual in that town, and a symbol of TP's people's feelings at the time... Laura dies, all hell breaks loose, problems begin... The dream becomes a nightmare, as Jean Renault said... There are fights in the Roadhouse, where Julee Cruise sings lovely songs and secret lovers (Ed and Norma, Donna and James) meet. One of the bikers' ironic line comes to mind too "Oh what a wonderful world". To me it's one of the best yet underappreciated scenes from the Pilot, which expresses something complex with the use of music... Always IMO, as I said maybe Lynch and Co. didn't thought about that.... Well?

Hmmm...when I saw it the first time, I laughed. I thought that it was hilarious that Lynch decided to keep the music playing while a major fight broke out. Seemed like a typical example of Lynch humor, but a good supposition nevertheless Gordo.

I'm trying to find something in TP which is not perfect at all,and I still can't find such, and I will never find!TP is just PERFECT,and its music is so special,so melancholic,so nice...It suits perfectly to it! I like Laura Palmer's theme most! And I must say that Badalamenti's music is great!Italian music can always touch my soul so deep, and TP's theme is very romantic,it reminds me of my childhood :( I damn adore "Twin Peaks" !!!
Beware of BOB

When I call out no one can hear me,when I whisper he thinks the message is for him only..my little voice inside my throat,I always think there must be something that I've done or something I can do...But no one no one comes to help,he says,a little girl like you...

Iva, I love you!
As far as "The Nightingale" playing during the fight, I love it. I think its very real...would the band have stopped playing just because a fight broke out? Probably not? And I think it also represents the town's sadness, as stated earlier.
This may be a good time to bring up my theory of Julle Cruise being the posthumous voice of Laura. All the songs are about innocece and love and longing and sadness and I think they are Laura's way of reaching out to those she left behined. Im not saying I think Julee was posessed or anything, I just think she's representing Laura in a way maybe even she is not aware of.
Life is FULL of mysteries, Donna.

The Girl Singer is like an archetype. Like the Blue Lady of BV or The Lloranda (sp?) of MD and maybe even Fred in LH, an I imagine Christa Bell will be have a similar role in Inland Empire (we'll see, its just a hunch.) Or a musical tool Lynch uses to say things without saying them overtly. Someone in the audience is listening and thinking 'wow, they know exactly how I feel.' Take Frank Booth and Dorothy. In this case, she's like a reluctant therapist, but she's channeling his fears and desires just by singing. In the case of Twin Peaks, Julee is expressing the pain of the town. In FWWM, Questions in a World of Blue became Laura Palmer's real theme. When I hear any given song from TP I think of all the other times its used and make all sorts of subconcious identifications. I think. The soundtrack is emotional.

I am currently composing a speed metal version of the track Barbershop.

That's one of my favorite tracks off the S2 Soundtrack, one I never expected to hear. You only hear a couple of snippets of it in FWWM, but I've loved it from the get-go. For me it conjures up a mood of deep longing for another person, one who (for whatever reason) you know you'll never be with. Really bittersweet.

But it's got that Kenny G making love by the fire saxophone, so surely it's not so... solitary.
Maybe it's about having vanilla mercy sex with a guy who has the IQ of a stool sample,.

You silly.
Well, it IS played when James Hurley is onscreen.

For fans of Badalamenti's music (I'm guessing that's everyone on this thread), he has posted a suite from Inside the Actor's Studio to his MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/angelobadalamenti It's characteristically beautiful. I don't recognise the music (although it obviously isn't that different from the usual, he borrows from himself a lot), does anyone know if this is a new composition?
