Am i the only person who finds it odd the sudden tendency Lynch has had o flate to promote TM? I mean, if he's been a practitioner since Eraserhead days, why only in the past couple of years has he mentioned it- but not merely mentioned it; it crops up in every single interview with him, without fail. Now, i dont doubt that Lynch believes in what he is talking about- but i just see it as slightly cultish and eerie....especially now that he and Donovan (by the way, for those not Scottish, Maryhill where he comes from, is adesolate place!!!) have teamed up to make a 'documentary' about life and probably TM, it makes me worry...It just all seems creepy.

Maybe he got tired of dodging questions about what his movies mean and decided to talk about something he knows instead.

His TM book Catching the Big Fish actually explain more about what his movies mean and/or his lack of patronizing explanations for those who 'don't get it' than his evasive answers to those questions.... The topics are very much related.

There is definitely something sinister about TM. It seems like many meditative practices are taught openly, as the teacher believes that the world would be a better place if everyone did it, so it is accessible. But with TM, whenever I look it up I see Pay $$$ To Learn. I bet Lynch is getting $s out of his constant promotion of it.

Anyone can do a meditative exercise and it doesn't cost a thing. Now, just relax....breath out get centered and lightly let your eyes close draw a figure 8-sideways if you like...on your mind's screen... That should raise alpha patterns, slow pulse and reduce blood pressure and change mental state to a meditative area.

Transcendental Meditation is essentially mantra meditation, and mantra meditation is something anyone can do without paying a cent or necessarily putting any religious or spiritual interpretation on it. Do a Google search if you want to see how to do it - it's quite easy. I wish Lynch would just tell people how to meditate without the TM baggage. The Beatles eventually dropped TM but still continued to meditate. It does relieve stress.
The question is, Where have you gone?

There must be something more to TM, though. They can't get you to pay money and then do basic mantra meditation. Oh, and what does your sig mean?

Sure they can. Oh, there are lectures and philosophy that go along with it, and it's taught as a seven-step process over (I think) four days. They also give you a personal mantra. But the basic technique itself is incredibly simple. (This is just what I've read about it; there is plenty of publicly available information about TM out there if you're interested.)
My sig line is a quote from a Twin Peaks character, Albert Rosenfeld, that I find amusing.

Now that I'm imagining Albert saying that, I can't believe I didn't know it was him! What does it mean though?
I was especially interested, as some of my fellow Lost geeks may also be, because the letters 'HO' appear in Season 4 numerous times together and Dharma is a big organisation in Lost.

In Hinduism and Buddhism, dharma refers to divine law, or conformity to one's duty and nature. Albert is mocking Cooper when he says that -- presumably, Cooper had been going on and on about some aspect of Tibetan Buddhism. Albert said "Hohoho" rather than try to pronounce the name of some Tibetan guru. I just find the line funny (even though I'm actually more sympathetic to Cooper's interest in Tibet than to Albert's cynicism). I've wondered why the Lost writers chose to call the group the Dharma Initiative... Back to meditation: there is a scene in Twin Peaks that mentions it. Cooper is talking to Diane and says that he has just completed his meditation. I can't remember which episode it is, but I think it's a Lynch-directed one.
The question is, Where have you gone?

Because quoting "deep" stuff totally makes you deep yourself.

Nooo! Meditation ain't mentioned in a Lynch episode, its the evil ep 28!!! Ahh! TM publictiy is very odd though- because yes it is very simple, and information on it tels you about how it will change your life bla bla all of these effects...and yet its very vague with what actually goes on, which leads me to suspect something sinister. I personally can do without The Big Fish road movie, with Donovan and Lynch telling us again how we can "go deep within, and it's a beautiful, beautiful thing. it's the idea, and sometimes you can fall in love with it.." I love Lynch, but I find this tedious. Or maybe im just bitter about the UK Inland Empire DVD, which contains aout 40 Lynch interviews in which he says EXACTLY THE SAME THING IN EACH ONE (anyone else agree?) and yet for some reason we didnt get More Things That Happened. Like it has been said, meditation is an incredibly simple tihng (thats its appeal, something anyone can do with practise) but TM organisation makes it into what it is oft percieved to be- some distant, profound thing which is complex and transcendental-making people feel that they need the guidance of organisations such as TM (Yeah, now im starting to tihnk of TM not as a method, but as an organisation)

The quote is from Albert at the beginning of episode 9. The whole thing, however, is "I'm thrilled to pieces that the Dharma came to King Ho-ho-ho, I really am." It doesn't mean anything, really, other than the fact that Albert is dismissing and exasperatedly mocking Cooper's previous comments "about the connection between the two" (i.e., Tibet and Twin Peaks).

I totally agree. I was really annoyed about the whole DVD. Made me feel like I'd really wasted my time, the film and the extras.

I have been blessed by some of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi teachings and their is a lot of things I totally disagree with. Me being a Christian I have some different terms, but some of the same things. Like instead of Meditation I use the term soaking prayer or Christian mystics. There are levels to it, but I don't think it is something you have to pay for. In a nutshell it is knowing God and developing a Christ Conscious. I feel the only way that can be done is through Jesus, but I am open to others going on their own path, if that is where they feel they must travel. I having horrible experiences with the Ouja board feel like it may be dangerous and to warn others. But I know that may be just part of their journey. Which in the end will lead to blessing or death. Christ conscious is being free to the limitations of self and of everything. You are no longer limited by sickness, diease, time, nature etc... I am not near at that level but have had some cool encounters. Some people may use a mantra. What I use is the bible and the hidden things in the bible. There are verses in the bible that unlock things within you. It isn't hidden. I don't know if that is a good term. But you have to be hungry to know God to see those things. Like many people don't know the seven ways God manifest. They don't see it. So, it is hidden to them. Someone could teach it to them, but if they are not hungry for it, they still will not see it. It will remain a mystery to them. So, the key is to be hungry. Christ consciousness also brings a peace and a life that passes all understanding.

Yes. It was way overlong, amazingly inaccessible, I had absolutely no inclination to see what any of it meant afterwards. And unlike Mulholland Drive, it wasn't enjoyable even if you didn't understand it.

Lynch has become faith-drunk in my opinion. No, I will not qualify this. I pay my taxes, I can say what I like.

I couldn't agree more. The UK INLAND EMPIRE DVD took the piss, frankly. It wouldn't have been quite so bad if he'd only said exactly the same thing in every interview on that DVD but every interview he gave to promote The Air Is On Fire and INLAND EMPIRE was about TM. I bought Catching The Big Fish (book and CD), downloaded the TM podcasts and bought a couple of the lecture DVDs and I'm still none the wiser.
Why do you have to buy a mantra? There's something distasteful about selling people peace of mind.
I ran from the noise and the silence, from the traffic on the streets

giospurs, I find IE more enjoyable in general than Mulholland, but anyway... Mulholland felt like a salvaged pilot episode that from the get-go wasn't very likeable. Lynch added a few interesting bits, but not much.. In comparison, IE has more of an overall interest value in my view.
