Was Carel Struycken not available or did he have a falling out with Lynch?  Or was the dark storyline of the days leading up to the LP death not required to have the Giant around since he was a "good" Lodge spirit? Just found it odd since every other lodge inhabitant appeared in FWWM.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

Not sure about the actor playing the Giant, BUT, the actor playing the Elderly Waiter (Hank Worden) had already died by that time. The two rarely appear without each other.

There's also some evidence that the Giant is Cooper's familiar, or perhaps guardian spirit, but he does not need to appear until Cooper is near death in episode 2.01. In FWWM, Cooper's appearances are limited anyhow. He could theoretically have appeared in the final scene, with Laura and the White Angel in the White Lodge, but well, it didn't happen apparently...

Carel would have loved to have been in FWWM, but he was not asked.

 Evidentally you don't understand the term "familiar" in the occult sense, which is what Mike meant when he said that BOB was his familiar. Here it is from wikipedia ;

Familiar spirit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  In early modern English superstition, a familiar spirit, imp, or familiar (from Middle English familiar, related to family) is an animal-shaped spirit who serves for witchery, a demon, or other magician-related subjects. Familiars were imagined to serve their owners as domestic servants, farmhands, spies, and companions, in addition to helping bewitch enemies. These spirits were also said to inspire artists and writers (compare Muse).

Familiars are considered an identifying characteristic of early modern English witchcraft, and serve as one feature setting it apart from continental or New World witchcrafts.

In the television series Twin Peaks, Killer Bob, a malevolent spirit entity, was said to be the familiar of another, more powerful entity named Mike; although Bob sometimes appeared in the form of an owl, he most often took the form of a long haired human man.

I see, my mistake then. And isn't there some benevolant equivalent of a familiar?

I suppose there could be - a familiar is a servant to a magician so i guess a good magician can have one too.

When Carel started making "suggestions" that his character should be the Black Lodge's butler & that The Arm should pop up out of strategically placed boxes, it was surmised that his mind was on  a different film & he was politely  "let go". He grumbled "rrrrr, Mr. Lynch", on his way out...

 I don't think that is the sense in which Mike meant that BOB was his "familiar" at all.  There is nothing to suggest that BOB appeared to Mike in animal or owl form... in fact, the tattoo connection seems to disprove this.

This addition to wiki, it seems, is conjecture and should be flagged.

In what sense is Mike more powerful than BOB?

We see BOB inhabit people and commit murder and rape (garmonbozia), but what do we actually see Mike do? Apart from, I suppose, inhabiting Philip Gerard.

Mike lost some of his power when he cut off his arm and became the MFAP. The MFAP seems far more powerful than Bob. To an extent, he controls Bob, as well as other Lodge spirits (the Tremonds, but this is open for debate of course). He clearly presides over the Red Room (perhaps even created it?), acts as a sort of gatekeeper into the Black Lodge, and has the ability to bend time.
