What do you think and which according to you are the symbols and their meaning in this early Lynch movie?

Whatever you interpret as Henry's emotional response to whatever object/place/event you think is symbolic, is likely the best answer. I don't think Lynch pulls too much from Jung, more his own intuition, though you can if you want to. You really have to use the tools on the screen like context and actor reaction to decode symbols. And everyone is going to get a different answer. I see different possibilities every time I watch it. In general, one could say everything in Henry's environment is in place mainly to make him feel disturbed. The things he keeps in his room that make him happy are his only reasons for hope and happiness. The baby violates this peace. The X house is a worst case meet the parents scenario.

Do people on here watch this film and enjoy it with no symbolism? Because it was really a struggle when I watched this film. Nothing much happened combined with an atmosphere of complete depression made it hard to cope with for me. Now that I'm familiar with Lynch I'd probably enjoy it a bit more but I still can't see why it's got such a cult following. Which is funny, because it's really not discussed on this board often, and most of us are Lynch fans, but before I knew who David Lynch was Eraserhead was the one film of his that I had heard of, i.e. seen posters of it around.

I discussed Eraserhead with a buddy of mine. We talked about one scene in particular. The scene where Henry is having dinner with the family and the chickens start to ooze and the family starts to yell. His theory was that it is a symbol for Henry taking away Mary's virginity and breaking her hymn, explaining why her family has a sudden outburst and her pregnancy. I haven't re-watched it since, but it's an interesting point.
