I am back, of course. Is Req still around? What about staringgirl? I'd like to catch up with her... ;)  Did Nefud drop off the face of the planet?

Req pops in once in a while. He's more prevalent on IM, MySpace, and Facebook than anything else.

Nefud popped in for a short bit (a few days, to be exact) last year and then disappeared again. But rumor has it that he got married last summer, so perhaps he's been preoccupied?

Staringgirl doesn't come 'round here much anymore, but she will be at the fest.

Oh, and here's a pic of me from a work conference I attended a few weeks back. The guy in the middle was one of the conference attendees and the hot chick on the right is his fiancée. They were awesome. But no, we really did get all kinds of work done at the conference. I swear.

I've been keeping busy in graduate school, trying to make antidotes to ricin (well I think it's cool)

Even with the usual 12-14 hours working in the lab, I still find time to party like a psychopath.... but I've calmed down in some respects

well then allow me to indulge you further;

I am synthesizing small molecules that will hopefully bind to the active site of ricin, a very potent toxin that use to be used by the KGB to assassinate people. My molecules are all heterocycles containing nitrogen, and usually oxygen.... and of course LOTS of carbon, as I am an organic chemist.

I've also been teaching undergraduate labs. Typically Pre-Med students. So EVERYONE feels they neeeeeeeed and A in the class, and want to make sure you know how much they neeeeeed to have it. It's usually funny more than bothersome.

Oh dear. I think I've just come.

And here I just want to get A's in my classes because I like to learn and do well. Hmph! I coulda been pre-med! I had a girl in my last chem class who whined constantly because she HAD to have an A (she was a nursing student). She was uber competitive to the point of being silly. I consistently scored higher than her on the weekly quizzes, and she'd have a tantrum after class with the instructor, wanting to know how it was possible that I did better than her. If I wasn't so amused by her attitude, I would have found it mildly insulting. In the end, quite a number of us ended up with A's and she ended up with her own personal nervous breakdown of sorts. She cried during the final. It was tops.

I am a whore for chemistry. If I had the time, I'd take more chem classes, but since I have to cram in the most ridiculous series of molecular biology classes on the planet, and I fulfilled all my chem requirements...I just sit around looking for reasons to bring up chemistry. (much in the same way I look for reasons to bring up geology, seismology, dendrology, and oenology...w00t for the ologies!)
