Hey everyone. been reading for years but thought I should sign up to post a question that I have.

My band are planning to shoot a new music video and want to recreate the Black Lodge the best we can for it. Curtains obviously the easy part and I'm sure we can rustle up some chairs and lamps to resemble that in the red room. The statue might be harder but do-able.

Does anybody have any idea about the flooring and how we could recreate it? Other than painting the floor?

Any help would be great. Thanks a lot
JOE

For the lodge setup we use at the festival, we bought painter's canvas dropcloth ($30 at the hardware store) and some housepaint and then created a zig-zag template which we used to actually paint the pattern onto the floor. Took a couple of hours and many beers. :D

Thanks I'll definately look at that then! Also I'm having trouble finding fabric the right size for the background. How did you go about getting such a big red curtain? Was it expensive. We are on quite a tight budget unfortunately :(

Well, I ended up buying pre-made tab-top curtains to save time and effort. They were $15 a pair and I bought 20 pairs. They were the most expensive part of the entire thing. I don't recommend that route unless you intend to reuse the lodge; I splurged on materials because of the fact that we use the lodge every year for the festival and I wanted to have something that would last through subsequent generations of fest organizers. The previous lodge we'd used was made with sheets of red velveteen fabric...we forced it to last for five years, at which point we chucked the entire lodge because it was just in tatters; it really should have been burned after three. The velveteen was a bad choice of fabric too. The lodge just should not be shiny...

My original plan, though, had been to just buy yards and yards of fabric. You can find lots of places online that sell whole bolts of fabric for really cheap, or you can go to your local fabric store and have them order the bolts for you. That way you can see the fabric in person and make sure the color is right. Some fabrics are as cheap as $1.50 a yard, so that's a much better investment for you, I think. :)

And before anyone asks or jumps to conclusions...I paid for the entire lodge myself, out of my own pocket. Not with festival funds!

It should also be mentioned that the lodge that we put up at the festival is hung in rafters in the upstairs of the reception hall barn. So we already have places to hang up the curtains. You'd have to buy some sort of framework to hang everything from.

The whole process of assembling the lodge is quite quick. Lay down the floor, and the curtains are all on one long piece or rope that we just ziptie up onto those beams (that way we don't leave any marks or anything). And last but not least, we just bring in the furniture that is usually on hand in the barn.

And just because I'm so proud of it,  y'all should check out my video slideshow of Amanda, Karlos, and I painting that wretched floor! Many thanks to EnableSecret as well. There aren't any pictures of him painting but he was there slaving away as well.
