I think this happens in Fire walk with me: Laura says to James before she run into the woods: Gone, long gone like a turkey in the corn.

Is this an unusual expression in the US? Is it an expression which is being used over there regularly?

Anybody know?

It is so common over here when I heard that dialogue the first time I saw Twin Peaks FWWM was the only time I have heard it in my 32 years.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

Maybe it was a more usual expression in the 1950's...? Anyway i remember getting the feeling it was a unusual or corny thing to say, at least for a teenager .....But it is also a very sad scene when these words are uttered.....

I been thinking and i'd like to know:

What is your favorite saying or proverb in the series?

This is a "favourite" - thread thats not been done, i think.....not sure now how many sayings there are in the series....

It's part of a traditional folk song, used in square dancing and prisons song. Johnny Cash, with his folk sensibilities, uses it, too in "Like the 309."   If anyone still says it, they've gotta be bumpkins.

i have always felt that in a strech, you could connect what she says to the idea of garmonbozia, which in physical form to be ingested, is creamed corn. i figure, if one of the main symbols to a movie is corn, any reference to it pretty much had to be intended. i mean come on, corn? not that it isnt vailid, but it is obscure symbolism. and the fact that laura believe she's lost in it makes it a bit more meaningful and less corny.(excuse the pun, i couldnt help it)

I've been thinking the same thing....that Laura is lost in the garmonbozia...... And you could say that the saying and the way she says it is a bit corny also.....

But what about the turkey? What those that symbolize? It should have been a owl that was lost...he he he!

Or a mynah bird? Or a bird that sings a pretty song where there's always music in the air? There's a crow outside the log ladys' cabin, and a hawk at the picnic place.  Cooper doesn't like birds.  Should I stop?

i was actually referring to past instances in which 12rainbow delights with her sarcasm
and is taken completely seriously by certain unstable members
and i find it funny
and hadnt seen it in a while
so it prompted me to post
but some people take it personally
which is their right, dont get me wrong
this is a friggin messageboard, not the UN
one can not expect more here than in other social situations one puts oneself in
but i have to say, your response seemed lacking in knowing that all those associations are a bit excessive
and that you didnt pick up on that point in 12rainbows post
thats just how it came across to me
sorry if you took offense
if you look back at my first post
we seem to have converging viewpoints on that line
so in essence i am agreeing with you
but insults are no excuse for arguements
and no assholes are anyones dream
youre not from wisconsin are you?

Back when FWWM hit the theaters and I heard it, I thought oh my God, there is not a teenager on this planet today that would say something as corny (pun intended) as that.

Just a quick note here- the bird in the opening credit is a Varied Thrush.  It is a robin-like bird that lives in forests on the west coast- it actually would live around Twin Peaks. I'll have to watch the series again to see if the other species were identified appropriately- I seem to remember some were not.

Maybe Laura was just having a vision of a lost turkey running through the cornfields.  It could be still trying to find its' way home now....

"watch out for my cousin.."
