I believe he would've broken out of prison sometime during season 3 and went after Ed or Norma? I don't think he'd take a divorce very lightly and would've been mad at them both

That's a fair call. Also, maybe Hank has a run-in with the 'posessed' Cooper and is instructed to do 'terrible things' until Cooper has no further need for him, and has Hank killed somehow.

The only way I would've been able to tolerate Hank returning would have been if he showed up and ten minutes later had his head rammed into the wall by Cooper/Bob. I never found him to be a terribly compelling character; his storylines, for me, rank right around those of James/Evelyn and Josie in my book. He just came off like a second-string Leo.
