How did Windham Earle know to invert that petroglyph lever in Owl Cave? Why didn't Cooper turn it upside down? Did turning it upside down open the Black Lodge as opposed to the White Lodge? I have always been confused by this. It may be a very obvious easy answer that I am just not grasping. Can someone verify what went down in this scene?
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this." -Dale Cooper

Earle saw the inverted symbol in the cave's ceiling... Coop didn't...

Coop turned into an idiot somewhere in the second season. He was incredible in the first season. In the second season, the guy who could guess Jacques blood type, suddenly, doesn;t realize his arch nemisis is sitting across from him at the Double R in a shoddy fake beard. Somewhere along the way Dale turned into the biggest dope. I only began realizing this on repeat viewings. Was it when he lost the suit and tie? -Req

That also shows in Cooper having to rely on Andy to figure out that the owl cave petroglyph is a map

The one that gets me the most is him ignoring the giant's warning about Annie running for Miss Twin Peaks.

Yeah, did he ever mention that again? I love that scene, though, and the fact that he ignores it give the final events of the series this grandiose, tragic quality.

I think it's described away as Cooper not understanding what the giant's warning meant and he was distracted by his love for the nun.

Well, to be fair, he was only waving his arms, shaking his head back and forth, and mouthing "NOOOOO!" in an exaggerated fashion. He should have rented one of those scrolling LED message boards.

I often wondered if Lynch/Frost would have let that go had they had been in charge of that particular scenario.
