After he had the dream sequence in episode 2, he called Sheriff Truman in the middle of the night just to let him know he knows who the killer is. Not only does he not go into details, he says it can wait until morning even though he felt the need to call him in the middle of the night just to let him know that he knew, yet not tell him.  Then the next episode opens with him conveniently forgetting.  I know this was done to drag the LP storyline out, but I always thought that was a lame copout and the writers should have come up with something else more creative and believable.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

For me that is one of the weakest aspects of Season 1. It would have been bad enough if it had happened in a middle of an episode but to end on such a cliffhanger and then when people sit down after a week of speculating and find out that he "forgot"

It came to me in a dream and I forgot it in another dream.

I often wondered why he didn't use Jacoby's preferred method of hypnosis - when he uses it to remember the night Jacques was killed.  But it's one of those things that's central to the plot (and let's face it, the ad campaign) so I guess it's unwise to ask too many logical questions!

You all talk like if "Twin Peaks" was a conventional crime series... Episode 2 was pure Lynch, so yes, what the hell: "It CAN wait till morning. Right now I'm still hypnotized by that music that filled in the air and wondering why we choose the images we choose in our dreams. *snaps fingers*".

He'd already forgotten when he woke up. That's why it can "wait until morning."  If he'd woken up knowing, he'd be on his way to arrest them...

See, this is where you either love the show (at least the early part) or don't.

It's a wink at serials, at plot conventions. It can wait until morning because we need another episode. It's all about the visual and style -Laura herself is a ridiculous plot contrivence to bring you into the fun.

By doing this in such an extreme, it's a play on television norms -just like Cooper being shot is a wink to cliffhangers especially JR being shot.

That's why my only problem with the first season is it lists a year during part of its run.  I would have only used Months and Days -so it could live in its own time warp.
