 What do you think?

His main criticism seems to be that Lynch tries to be too funny in relation to Rossellini's character. I never really saw the film in that way and am finding it hard to see from Ebert's perspective.

I'm more concerned with whether Gene Siskel tried to buy Blue Velvet's "yellow suit" to complement  his "ice cream suit"  from Saturday Night Fever!!!

That was definitely one of Ebert's biggest mistakes ever... giving one of the most important and finest American films one star, glad he's finally seen the light (he gave Lynch's last 3 films four stars).

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

I like Ebert  because he's his own man. Unlike some moive magazines like Empire which will give films good reviews if they are generally regarded as 'great films'. However, sometimes Ebert can be a little too 'individual'. What was he thinking when he gave Matrix Reloaded more than the Matrix??

I like Ebert too. Obviously, he was wrong about Blue Velvet, but he goes by his own heart and that makes it more interesting. Pauline Kael and Robert Christgau (in music) have something similar. I don't care if I agree if they make me see something from a different angle.

The man gave the movie 4 neat stars... I believe Lynch has grown on him (Ebert disliked "Blue velvet" "Lost Highway" and "Wild at heart" mainly for the violence and humiliation inflicted to the female stars). He made extremely good reviews of "The Straight story" (obvious, because it was a change of air), "Mulholland Dr." and the ultimate "Inland empire".

I especially liked the opening of this article. I think it expresses the film's essence.

Ebert didn't review Inland Empire, Jim Emerson did.

Weird that it still says Ebert next to the stars, I wonder if Ebert loved this film as well. It definitely gives you the impression he wrote it if you don't read the fine print.

yes, that's what I was thinking exactly. I bet Lynch has grown on Ebert the last few years and that IE caused a positive reaction by him.

In Barry Gifford's noir guide Devil Thumbs a Ride, B.V. receives a bit of a drubbing (this is pre- W.A.H.). A decade or so later, B.G.  put out an updated guide (now entitled : Out of The Past), & the Blue Velvet pan was curiously absent.  Hmmmm.....

Yeah, this resembles the early criticism of Apocalypse Now and Blade Runner that embarrassed critics now try to pretend never happened. Although I consider Blue Velvet to be even greater than those films. Lynch got criticized so much early on and now a lot of critics are praising his films to make up for it; except for Inland Empire, which will surely get it's due in another 15 or 20 years...
