Obviously, I know that it has a massive cult following still but when it was in its prime I was only just born, so I just wanted to ask how successful it was in the early 90s compared to a modern day successful show, such as Lost or Heroes.

In Spain it was a huge success... Massive following, actors coming as guests to spanish TV shows, stuff in magazines every week, Julee Cruise doing shows here, etc. I was 12 at the time and the TV channel that aired it (Tele 5) didn't broadcast in my city yet and even with that I remember the hype here... Too bad now the cult following here has nearly evaporated. You talk to someone about the show and all they can remember is "that weird show with dancing dwarves about a girl who is murdered".

The pilot and first season were extremely successful but the second season wasn't. The Who killed Laura Palmer mystery was the talk of water coolers everywhere and there were Twin Peak parties everywhere every week for people to get together and watch the latest episode. The first season probibly generated more interest in a TV show than anything prior to it (or since) at the time it was first on.

How would you say the first season compared to the second season?
I've never rewatched a single episode of TP so I can't comment that insightfully although there was definitely some of the most annoying storylines in Season 2 (e.g. James and the Blonde, and Little Nicky)

Amen to that! The hype around stuff like Lost is nothing compared with the global frenzy generated during TP S1.
How does S2 compare to S1? Don't we have, like, a thousand threads on this subject? The best answer was given quite recently by JVSCant. Sure, there's some crummy material in S2 - but it's more than 2x longer than S1, so..... "most of whatever you like about season one can be found in large doses in season two as well" Very well said!
Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

actually, there was a semi backlash after the first season finale when nothing was answered. It angered a lot of people. The second season premiere on Sunday came in third out of the big three networks, and the Saturday night airings didn't help it. There were lots of promos in early November swearing up and down that the murderer would finally be revealled, with voice overs of people saying, "yeah, right" and then the announcer answering, "no, seriously." Then the Gulf War came, and the series was put on hiatus for over six weeks. The return wasn't even sure until the voices of irate fans, and then it was moved back to Thursdays nights in mid March against powerhouse Cheers where it did poorly. The final two episodes were pulled, and not aired for another month and a half in early June. Screwing over the Audrey/Cooper plot didn't help things when those two were the biggest draw.

The show had huge ratings and in the gold box set i think it was Mark Frost that says Paul Mcartney was supposed to put on a show for the queen of england but she said she couldnt watch it because Twin Peaks was coming on in 5 minutes. Now that is success! but I read that ratings plummeted during the second season and the show lost alot of viewers in america after the murder of laura palmer was solved.
