Bob is very scary, but his character is slightly tainted but some ridiculous scenes that almost seem like parodies of the character later in the series (episode 16, and the ending of episode 23). I must say that I totally disagree with people who think Ray Wise was the true BOB; his acting in episode 16 was painfully ridiculous, though he is great in the rest of the series, and even better in FWWM. Still, few things scare me more than the murder scene in episode 14. The Man From Another Place was initially scarier to me... though by FWWM BOB was much scarier... villains that have remained scarier to me are all from other Lynch projects... the baby in Eraserhead, and yes, the supposedly angelic Lady in the Radiator, who freaks me out just as much (I wonder if this was intentional), and the most scary and evil villain in movie history, who always has to win over BOB, Frank Booth (why am I the first one to mention him?). Is it just me, or have Lynch's villains been progressively less scary than Blue Velvet? First there was BOB, very scary, then Bobby Peru, demonic but can't hold a candle to Frank, then the Mystery Man, who is pretty freaky then... the Bum in Mulholland Dr. and the Phantom in Inland Empire? The Bum wasn't all that scary and I didn't even figure out exactly who the Phantom was and what scenes he appeared in till almost the end of IE. Seems his films are now scary due solely to atmosphere (which has always been a big factor of them anyway), instead of in characters... Mulholland Dr. is oddly intense and scary, but it's hard to say why... it's more because you constantly sense that you are about to discover something bigger... a terrible truth lurking just out of reach...

Ray Wise was brilliant in FWWM. The scene where he kills Laura is amazing although it's probably less scary than just horribly intense, especially when he says, "Don't make me do this!". The Phantom freaked me in IE when the distorted clown face came on but other than that second he's hardly 'scary'.

Just thinking out loud, "scary" is a strange word as if you 'scare' a lot then you are 'scare-y-'. I can't think of any words that work like that. Or maybe, is that complete bullshit   I don't know?

I think Bob has a 4 bedroom apartment in the LA area with the Mystery Man from LH, the phantom from IE, and the bum from MD.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

what mostley scares me aboot bob probably is his human form. He could have been anyone out in the streets (there actually are long- and greyhaired men wearing jeansoutfits, eventhough it seems strange ) and that scares the shit out of me. The evil taking a wellknown form, tareing your safe surroundings and your safe world apart, hiding, seeking...Kinda like finding out that it is your own father who is sexually abusing u (as the discussion goes after Leland has died). It scares me that I propbably wouldn't recognize this sort of evil even when it's standing right infront of me. That's why Bob is the scariest for me - I would definately run like crazy if I had a giant spider infront of me instead. I would probably immediately know that it's out to get me...

The character of Jack Torrence is the prototype of BOB. He's the historical resident evil!

I can name a hell of a lot of images and atmospheres in the Shining that are leaps and bounds scarier and more disturbing. The close up of the word MURDER (especially with the backwards letter; even when it was parodied on the Simpsons it gave me chills); The man in the dog outfit against the gentleman in the tuxedo (and prior to that, the odd chanting sounds as Wendy is going up the stairway); The old woman and her laugh; Jack frozen in the snow (and the suddenness of it). I gotta hand it to that movie, nearly every scene is tense. However, the "Here's Johnny" never got to me, despite the fact that Nicholson's howling (either when stabbed, or chopping Hallorann with an axe) has that horrid effect.

However, I do agree with you that it's the context of BOB's image, and the atmosphere that allows the effect.

There's nothing even remotely scary or creepy about him or his appearance to me, though he is kind of a f*cker, what with the rape and the soul stealing and all.

I just noticed something interesting. On the wikipedia page for the Shining (novel) I think the cover features a Michael Ontkean likeness for Jack Torrance

Don't get me wrong; I thought that he was excellent in every other episode of the show, and possibly at his best in FWWM, but he seemed to be parodying Jack Nicholson in The Shining in episode 16. He played that part all wrong; though he's much more talented than Frank Silva, he clearly can't play BOB. He was great in FWWM but a lot of that time he seemed more like he was still somewhat Leland than totally possessed by BOB, since there's more ambiguity about how the possession works in that film than in ep 16. I can't stand episode 16; it's a horribly over the top ending to a great storyline, that seems more like some kind of awful rip off of the show than the thing itself. The following episode is actually much better, even though 18-23 are terrible.
