Well, it's not so stupid, because Lynch said that ISTINCT is the human faculty that spectators must possess when they're in front of a film...No logic involved here, only sensations that take form through confused words... So my recurrent comment during the film was "oh my...What...Why...Shh...It doesn't matter..." And yours? Sonia

"What the fuck is going on???" and that's about it. I need some of you to try to convince me it was good 'cos at the moment it ranks 3rd worst on my Lynch list, ahead of Dune and Eraserhead.

I'm a fan of Frank Herbert's Dune (as my signature and nickname could reveal) and I admit that the book is a masterpiece instead of the film, that is not, but...How can you put Eraserhead so much down in your personal chart? Sigh... Sonia

Maybe it's because I've only seen it once and it was only the second Lynch film I'd seen so I perhaps should have had more time for it like I did for The Straight Story, which I'm sure if I'd been impatient with I would disliked.

Radicalness. And this word pops into my mind each single time. That's being my sixth.

The Straight Story is a very good film. "That Laura Dern is pretty darn good" and "This is f-ing awesome!" are the two thoughts that came to mind while watching Inland Empire, which I think I've seen 8 times so far, but it could be 7.

"Wow!" "I love this camerawork." "I love the look of the picture, the texture." "Wow!" That kind of thing. I'm looking forward to my second viewing.

"Fuck" I found it really unsettling. And that face near the end, the big grin, that made Requiem For A Dream look like The Lion King.

I didn't really wonder "what the fuck is going on"? during this film, 'cause I had already accepted that the film would be totally dreamlike, totally unlike anything except (somewhat) Lynch's other films. I just experienced it without really theorizing, just watching actively enough to make connections, etc., and by the end of the film I was one of the least confused people to be walking out... After my second viewing I discovered little more about the plot, but I did realize that this is a very important film... it's approach to film making and narrative is innovative enough to establish it as the most important film in at least a decade... though I think Mulholland Dr. is a "better" film and I like it more, but IE is much more important... certainly Lynch's most important film since Blue Velvet.

Yeah, me too. I think "that looks cool. That, too."
Also, "Pepto bismol pink is unsettling." and "Rabbits is the sh*t." Was digging on the Pederecki, too.

Also: "Shit, that's Cameron from Pirate Master!" "Shit, that's Mr Pitt from Seinfeld! Oh yeah, he was in Twin Peaks, too, of course." "Shit, who's that guy? I know the face..." "Shit, that's Masuimi Max!" Lots of cameo appearances in Inland Empire.

Hahaha, I said, "Shit, that's Mr Pitt from Seinfeld" too, right after "where have I seen this guy before? Think! THINK!!"
Mr Pitt was in Twin Peaks? edit: Apparently he was in ep. 13. I don't remember that at all, even though I saw it recently.
"What credit card do you want to put that on?" "Caash, prease."

I was nervous when I went to see it because a bunch of friends came with who were neither Lynch fans, nor even fans of weird movies in general. I kept thinking, "These guys are going to kill me." -cg

Can't think of anything else to add--sums up my experience exactly. I watched IE for the first time at the midnight showing in Seattle last Jan. Between the rain, the opening cello player, and my altered state of consciousness (after driving 6 hours in the rain/snow to get there) I was pretty freaked.

I felt the exact same way right in the moment I was walking out of the theatre: drained!
During the film I was excited in the first part and through some moments I thought "This is amazing! It's gonna be very traditional and mysterious at the same time.". Then, when Laura gets in the house I thought "Oh my God! Here it comes again... The chaos!!!!!! Oh, how I love it".

At what point did you think IE would be "very traditional"? There's not a scene in the movie I would describe as traditional, though the narrative does seem fairly straightforward at the beginning. But those opening scenes make it more than clear this won't be a traditional film in any sense of the word.

well, yes, the very beginning is not traditional at all, but I would say it's not Lynch's best, for me of course. It's just the whole first part makes you take it quite easy. You understand? There's even some laughs. That's why I said 'traditional'. Of course, a Lynch kind of traditional!
