In episode 8 or 9, Maddy has a vision when looking at the carpet, a strange brown pattern. She's talking to Sarah, and says she had a dream she was sitting in the same chair looking at the carpet. No doubt the pattern/vision has something to do with BOB. Can anyone shed any more light on this??

the consensus is, i believe, that she is seeing a premonition of her own blood on the carpet,
which comes true when Leland/BOB kills her to keep her from leaving

And there's the famous alternative version (which is cheesy, yes, but I prefer) where she sees BOB's face, which makes more sense when later Coop mentions Maddy saw BOB twice in the past few days...

Since both the Euro and the broadcast pilot will be in the box set, I guess it's anyone's guess.  If it is included, hopefully they'll make it look better (as intended.)

when did Cooper mentioned that Maddy saw Bob twice in the past few days?

And sorry, that carpet/Bob face business is bad, bad, bad.   It's up there with the computerized owl and the monk imagery for low points.  (not to  mention Andy's thought bubble with little Nicky as the devil)

I'm with Audrey on this one. The first thing that is revealed (in a sort of "hand through water effect") is BOBs MOUTH. Now, I know that BOB is probably the single most frightening thing I've ever seen on screen, and that they need to maintain that "when he wears a smile, everyone run!" The problem is, I don't want to see a random open mouth smiling start to ripple into existence. Totally lame effect.

Episode 10, I think... Coop mentions that to Harry when they are discussing who saw BOB. He says that four people has seen him (Coop, Maddy, Sarah, Ronette) and that Maddy saw him twice, probably in reference to the carpet scene and after "Just You and I".

BTW, there are tons of badly done special effects in the show... There's a shot of a storm that looks that it was taken directly from an Ed Wood film and one of the most effective episode endings, ep.16, shows an owl awfully overimposed in the screen... The owls from Owl Cave come to mind too. The kind of unimportant stuff that Lucas always retouches in his flicks...

It was the early 90s, it was TV, they couldn't do better...

Not in the first season there's not.  Not one bad effect, in fact, no effects were needed.  Well, I suppose the superimposed face of Laura on Donna's face -but I'll let that slide.

I don't think we need to see Bob's face to know Bob is present.

Beauty is momentary in the mind -
The fitful tracing of a portal;
But in the flesh it is immortal.
The body dies; the body's beauty lives.
So evenings die, in their green going,
A wave, interminably flowing.
So gardens die, their meek breath scenting
the cowl of winter, done repenting.
So maidens die, to the auroral
Celebration of a maiden's choral.
Susanna's music touched the bawdy strings
Of those white elders; but, escaping,
Left only Death's ironic scraping.
Now in its immortality, it plays
On the clear viol of her memory,
And makes a constant sacrement of praise.

I like the owl and the cloaked figure effects (hides face behind cushion)...

The scene where Bob appears in the carpet didn't look bad at the time, it's just that special effects have become so much more sophisticated since then. I wasn't even aware there was such a thing as a no-Bob version until season two was released on DVD.

I ran from the noise and the silence, from the traffic on the streets

Until about 3 days ago, I'd only ever seen the version with BOB's face in the carpet. The other version is slightly less cheesy, but it makes less sense, as Gordon says.

I think that the original version is terrifying, whereas the other is laughably stupid. It's funny how little changes can totally change the quality of a scene. Just the blood makes more sense than pretty much any vision in Twin Peaks; the only reason the BOB version would make more sense is one throwaway line from Cooper which most people miss. I really do dislike the reliance on cheesy effects in the later part of season 2; one of the worst cases is episode 16. I can get the idea of having BOB's face but the effect is just horrible. Just the blood is more effective than even a good effect would be anyway. It's one of those many cases in Twin Peaks where limitations and deadlines actually helped the quality of the series. Now if only that stain was more clearly blood...

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!
