Labor Day -- Worst Holiday of the Year? |

I think so. I don't even like the name. That has little to do with the fact that I went into labor on a Labor Day weekend. No, it's not that. It's just a dull holiday. I can't even believe people have parties or travel because it's (whoopee!) Labor Day! YAY!!! Think about it. As a kid Labor Day is just that horrific reminder that school is about to begin. Can the end of Daylight Savings Time be far behind? There's no cool motif for Labor Day. No pumpkins, flags, bunnies, turkeys, trees, hearts -- boring. So what distinguishes Labor Day? Another 3 day weekend. Another (hohum) barbeque. More traffic jams. Do the labor unions really live it up on that first Monday of September? Anyway, I am a bah-humburger when it comes to this useless holiday. Oh, and cards. Did any of you receive a Happy Labor Day card? Ever? Flowers. Ever answer the door to a florist bringing you a bouquet of Labor Day lilies or pointsettias? I didn't think so. Okay. Enough. Bring on Halloween and let the beautiful Fall/Winter holidays begin! Well, I'm Labor & I usually work that day (at holiday rates), while management gets the day off. Have I ever been offered the day off on Bosses' Day? Here kids go back to school right after (Tues/Wed), so it's kinda a last hurrah, end of summer thing. And in Seattle we have Bumbershoot on Labor Day weekend. Unfortunately, I'm working all 3 days, so I'm only going on Sunday (when most of the acts I wanna see perform). Sorry you don't care for L.D., Sue. I will NOT suggest that you actually hate labor itself, because you are now Republican scum. That would be too cliche. Enjoy your day OFF, while I'm working...

Leave it to you, Chris, to inject some lofty political sentiment into a lighthearted "attack" of the uber-boring holiday -- Labor Day. Tee hee Hey, I'm not saying that expecting political discourse deeper than a tired bumpersticker jab from your basic hostile Trotskyite is unlikely, but if the foo shits, wear it... The Man, Susan

For me, Labor Day is a day off from classes. I'm away from home for the first time (not including summer trips), at a four-year university, with three days of no-responsibility freedom. It's going to be boring as f**k.

I thought you might. I have an 8X10 (uncropped) postcard version on my dorm room wall. I still can't think of an apropos lyric for my sig line, though.

I love labor Day!! Then again, you all know why by now. If it wasn't the annual getaway with my best friend to his Dad's place on Lake Michigan (and other guilty parties) than I wouldn't even give the holiday a second thought.

I am with Chris on this. Although I have never worked in USA, we have plenty of holidays in the UK and as I have always earned a wage rather than a salary (as a lowly underling), I always hated national holidays because it was an enforced payless day. Guess if I had a regular salary then I would take the opposite view.

Beautiful fish, Smokey! Wow--looks like you had some really nice weather. We were up North this weekend--Lake Superior was as calm as I've seen it in a long time. Wow--those pics make me want to go back up to the U.P.

Smokey - love the t-shirt. My brother has that same shirt and it makes me giggle every time I see it. I can come up with worse holidays to celebrate than Labor Day. And honestly, I don't think anyone's really actually "celebrating" Labor Day so much as they're celebrating...or rather, lamenting...the end of summer. It's a day to just kick up one last solid summer barbecue and listen to classic rock while playing horseshoes with your drunk uncle. Sucks for people who get stuck working the whole weekend though. Talk about putting a crimp in your celebrating.

Another excerpt from the Labor Day weekend. This is a video of my friends Scot and Mike entering the Nahma Days Logcutting competition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbmEulf3Qa4

That was a manly endeavor, Smokey! If Scot (was he the one on the left?) had gotten down lower, I'll bet that log would have been sawed through quicker. I kept waiting for him to get down on his knees. The lake house was magnificent. Cute fish too! Gotta love the Midwest when it comes to having a wholesome good time! Susan

Thanks for the comments, folks! That's funny, Susan, what you said about Scot, because the general opinion in Nahma was that Mike was too close to the log. Upon reviewing the video, Scot was a tad high up there. Now that they are YouTube stars they can review the video and improve their techniques (Mike farther away and Scot lower?) for next year. It was a glorious getaway and Scot and I finally got to go fishing! We've been wanting to, but couldn't get a majority vote the last two years. All day out on the boat Monday, Scot and I kept joking about what a horrible time we were having (although we did get nice sunburns!) and Bill kept saying how Mark and the rest were going to throw up when they saw the size of our catch. We did well, 9 altogether. Scot got the first and then got victimized by gobies the rest of the day. Once I found the hot spot, Bill and I started doing much better.

So I downloaded my Labor Day weekend photos and lo and behold -- Labor Day was not the worst holiday! Actually had a really good time. We drove up to Point Reyes Seashore, West Marin county north of San Francisco. As you can see, swarms of others did not do the same. This is good. Keep the secret. David on the hike to Kehoe Beach -- dog beach. White sand...

After a half mile or so, this is where we ended up... Virtually alone. On a Sunday late morning. Labor Day weekend. And no crowded parking lot! No parking lot at all. Free roadside parking. Amazing!
The mid-point between LA and San Francisco is the Harris Ranch Kitchen where we stopped for lunch. The horse painting on the wall behind me made me think of The Soprano's "Pie-Oh-My."

The lodge we were fortunate enough to find at the last minute. This is in Olema. Population: 55.
The town where time stood still -- Point Reyes Station. Yes, there are a lot of hippies here.
And a lot of cows...
...and lots of cute little calves...
Love the landscape and skies here...

What's with the dutch angles? LOL! That lodge looks incredible. It didn't occur to me to take a picture of our lodgings. I did take a pic of the lake inlet that was right next to our cabin. I guess you could call it a lodge. Love that landscape photo. See looks like Labor Day wasn't so bad after all.

I'm not even going to Google "dutch angle" or "Dutch courage" but I'm thinking it has something to do with standing on a dyke to take a photo. Susan
