I've always had the feeling that Nadine is one of the least liked TP characters, though that fact is not often mentioned in the Gazette... We always talk about Evelyn, Lana, Little Nicky, but I don't feel much more appreciation for Mrs. Hurley that for those infamous characters. However, a scene with her is usually mentioned among the worst from the series... I'm talking of course of the guy flying in the cheerleader contest or whatever mess that is...

So what's your opinion of Nadine?

As for me, she doesn't interest me as much as other characters, she seems to live in another world with her drape runners, her cotton balls and later Mike and as she put it "all the stuff I won". She doesn't seem to react at all about Laura's death, not a bit, becoming of little interest for the viewer... She's one of the elements of the subplot about the Norma-Ed-Nadine love triangle, but is that story interesting in the first place? Later the character changes (or does she?) drastically and in an unexpected way, like Leo, but only to become protagonist of the worst subplots and scenes of the series...even until the last episode, when she "wakes up" (that's a wonderful moment, I must add).

After many, many viewings I care less and less about Nadine and her problems... And it's sad, because I think Wendy Robie does a fine job and yes, she has good scenes: there's something really, really sad in the way she says "Rejected, that's what he said", when he and Ed embrace each other and she has love eyes while he looks in the distance probably thinking in Norma or the sweet scene of the hospital with Norma watching them... But Nadine, Nadine herself, ah, can't say I love her......

A wild thought: do you think it's possible that Ed wanted to KILL her when he shot her in the eye? I know, Ed, Big Ed, killing a woman?? His wife?? How can that be? But I've always had that in mind as a strange an twisted possibility....

Nadine was my mom's favorite character---don't know if it was the eyepatch, the runners, or what, but she lit up like a Christmas tree whenever Nadine was there. She would always say, "Poor Ed." :)  I felt sorry for Ed too---always rootin' for him and Norma to hook up. I used to joke that she and Jacoby should have gotten it on---unlimited supply of cotton balls!!! :)  I must admit I didn't like Nadine at all at first...she was just so bitchy, "ED, YOU MAKE ME SICK!!!" But she grew on me as time went on...probably because Wendy played her so well. Perhaps part of Ed did want to kill her---it reminds me of just after Nadine takes the sleeping pills, and Ed is at the hospital *Just after Coop walks out against Doc's orders* and they have the talk on the little sofa. Ed mentions that he saw this coming and that he's thinking part of him didn't want to stop it. "And that's a full load."

I must admit I quite liked Nadine.  I know she was a bit of a bitch to Ed but I always wondered what had made her that way.  I always figured her unhappiness in her marriage must have made her bitter over the years and resulted in the Nadine we meet when the programme begins.  She probably always had her bad points, and I know Ed was more or less on the rebound, but there must have been something in her that he saw and thought he would be able to live with.

I do see a lot of comedy value in her, obviously enhanced when her character goes through her bump on the noggin.  You do wonder at first what on earth she can have to do with the main plot as she doesn't seem to have any reaction to Laura's death.  But maybe her regression to a high-school student is to highlight how innocent and happy you should be at that point in your life, as opposed to Laura's life at the same age.  Furthermore, Nadine's obvious exuberance (although startling) and her obvious devotion to Ed at that age (as we see it after her accident) shows she was not always the hag she became.

She was ok by me

My theory by A. Elk, brackets, Miss, brackets. This theory goes as follows and begins now. All brontosauruses are thin at one end, much much thicker in the middle, and then thin again at the far end. That is my theory, it is mine, and it belongs to me, and I own it, and what it is, too.

You're absolutely right, Ange....she did provide some excellent comedy. Always gets a chuckle from me when she snaps out of her teenage fog, and her first concern, "WHERE ARE MY DRAPE RUNNERS!?!?!?!" Her character softens as the series progresses, which I think is a very nice touch. When she beats the crap out of Hank!!! PRICELESS!!!

Yeah, I quite like Nadine. The throwing is a tad shit, but mostly she's great. Reminds me a bit of my mum actually. Sorry mum.

Nadine is a very interesting character indeed. Personally, I do like her, however I agree the cheerleader/wrestling scenes were tiresome. I think Nadine knew Ed would prefer to be married to Norma than her, which is why she is so unhappy during the marriage. Nadine's hatred for Norma isn't fully explained in the series (the encounter at the store in episode 1 and the final episode is really the only times). In the original script for FWWM, there is a scene where Ed & Nadine enter the RR, but Nadine leaves after seeing Norma there. Another interesting deleted scene had Nadine skinning a dear for Ed.

Gordon, I'd just like to say how much I enjoy these character threads

My personal thoughts on Nadine Hurley: Well, first of all I think she is an asset to the first season. She is one of the quirkiest and, in a way, mysterious characters. Why is she yelling like that? What's with the cotton balls? Why in the hell did Ed marry this weirdo? To me, Nadine seems like a faded version of herself. I think she had major self esteem problems back in high school, was obsessed with Norma...wanted to be her. When Norma gave Ed the slip, Nadine, who was probably very attractive in those days, used her whiles to get her man. She took the bullet in the eye as the brunt for her marraige to Ed.

Furthermore, I think Nadine is the most interesting thing about the traingle between herself and Norma and Ed. Why is Ed so scared to leave her? I personally think its because he feels guilty about a lot of things (and the aforementioned attempted murder point could come into play here) and also feels like he has to take care of her. I mean, Norma was willing to risk it all...and Ed couldnt. Nadine really was just a poor little brown mouse who could never take care of herself.

All that said, I fucking hate the cheerleader subplot.

Life is FULL of mysteries, Donna.

I'm with the crowd here.  I liked Nadine, except for the super-human strength garbage.  For the most part, her scenes had the right blend of humor and quirkiness.  The eye patch, the drape runners, even her history with Ed were part of the Twin Peaks fun.  Her attitude toward Ed early on was understandable; she knew that Ed was still seeing Norma.  Thankfully, the "corkscrew" scene only lasted about ten seconds.

The last series run through I had, I realized how much I like the scene where Nadine asks Donna permission to go after Mike Nelson.  Donna thinks the whole thing is hilarious, and that amuses me.  My other favorite scene in episode 29 (besides Shelly, Bobby and Heidi) is Nadine coming around and realizing things are even worse than when she tried to OD.  It's so heartbreakingly pathetic.  She really loved Ed all along, as evident in the group therapy session with Jacoby.

I love Nadine mostly because she's the fiercest shag in town.

I never liked Nadine.

Clearly I am not alone in disliking the subplot of her in HighSchool and all that jazz about throwing a guy. Gordon covered that.
But I really didn't like her before teh subplot either. I was never interested in her, and found her to be quite a pain most of the time.

However, despite all my distaste for Nadine.... when she attmpts suicide and then the resulting coma, I found myself thinking "awww, that's kind of... sad"

Very strange. Why should I feel sorrow for a characer I care nothing about? Most likely, it has to do with liking Ed's characer. And despite his rocky relationship with Nadine, I'm sure he does care for her. So, it was probably my feeling sympathy for Ed when I felt bad for Nadine. That seems reasonable.

MSA, excellent points....

That's the reason why I find sad that scene too, and others related to Nadine: Ed and his feelings... I see that Nadine is appreciated by most of you and the reasons exposed are understandable, she's a weird, quirky character, impossible to leave you indifferent. My problem is that after you see how Nadine is, his behavior, character ark and let's say, M.O. there's nothing beyond IMO... She doesn't provide anything else...

Just like Dick. Dick is Lucy's suave, dumb and 'bohemian' new date. Once you know him you inmediately arrive to the conclusion wether you love him or you hate him, because the plot doesn't provide him with much more than Little Nickys, pine weasels and Lanas, unlike brilliant characters like Audrey, Ben, Leland or Coop that are interesting by themselves and because of the things they go through...

But I love Dick Tremayne....

Most of my thoughts on Nadine have already been expressed, like how she seemed to be so unaffected by Laura's death.  I always found it interesting how she lived in her own little world and the things that went on in the town really had no bearing on her life whatsoever.  Or the scene where she doesn't seem to recognize who James is (even before she took all the pills and became even more wacko).  It just shows how real life did not seem to affect her at all.

Seems like at some point in her life, her mind seemed to fixate on what went on in her high school days between herself, Ed and Norma and she can't quite seem to stop living in that time period.  Perhaps that is why when she wakes up from her coma, she believes that she is a senior in high school.  She can't seem to resolve that part of her life and maybe that is her mind's way of dealing with it.

My personal opinion of Nadine has changed after watching TP so many times.  At first, I couldn't stand any scene that she was in and she really irritated me.  I'm finding now that her quirkiness makes me laugh.  I thoroughly enjoy the comic relief that she provides.... "Cotton balls!  By God those things will be quiet now!"  (I love that line!)

I'm just a little fairy princess.... I am mad with the power.  MUHUHUHUHAHAHA!!!

She could've been used a lot better. Imagine if Nadine's fixation to the drapes would've been somehow connected to the Red Room.

My favourite Nadine moments are she being excited and suddenly punching Ed and the scene where Ed finds her almost dead. I find it hilarious every time I see the punching scene and the suicide scene is heartbreaking.

I've always liked the idea that when Nadine lost half of her sight it inhanced her hearing making a need for silent drape runners. I happened to really enjoy Nadine's return from the coma, it really upset me watching Nadine fixing her dress and neatly perparing herself for suicide.

p.s it's good to be back!
