Do you think that Lynch achieved the right balance between the serious parts of the show that are integral to the plot and the funny/silly moments. This mix is what made the show great but I think that parts like the Little Nicky story and Ben Horne's temporary insanity are definitely surplus to requirements

In the episodes that Lynch directed, Yes. David added that special touch of magic. There were several different directors in season two that tried to be like David and in some cases it back fired (calling Diane Keaton). Keep in mind that ABC (the network airing the show) was not supporting the show after Laura's killer was revealed. Ratings were sliding south and the panic button was on stand by.

I still harbor a serious hankerin' to see the legendary lost outtake from Ep. 29, where BOB "throws" Garmonbozia on the Red Room floor, causing a fleeing Coop to slip & slide in it until he's all atangle in the drapes, toppling the Venus deMilo statue, spilling syrup-consistency "coffee" all over BOB's fave loveseat. It all concludes with a high-speed pursuit of Keystone Dale by LMFAP, The Giant, Leland & BOB, with scantilly-clad visions of Laura, Maddy, Caroline & Annie, all to the tune of Yakkety Sax... Roll credits...

If it wasn't filmed, it should have been...

Well, yes, a number of the Keystone Coops bits were filmed, to be included in the Hanna-Barbera TP cartoon spinoff The Sheriff Andy Mysteries. Harry's in rehab, Coop went boi-oi-oing, & Hawk's running the new One-Eyed Jack's Casino (now called Eagle Eye's! Thanks, Gwen!), so it's up to Andy (Casey Kasem) & Lucy (E.G. Dailey) & Li'l Andy (Jim Nabors) to solve the wacky goings-on in our beloved Twin Peaks!!! Every episode ends with Andy crying & Li'l Andy offering his diaper as a hanky!!!  Needless to say, it didn't test too well with the 2-12 age group...
