I just wanted to send a happy Canada Day wish to all the Canadians on the forum! Hopefully today involves some music, fireworks, BBQ or other festive celebrations.

I'm feeling a little ill about the latest propoganda piece by Canada's own MM. Or wait... Is he Cuban? I get confused.
Yay for freedom of choice! Yay for personal responsibility! Yay for doctor's private practice! Yay for seeing a specialist before 6 months go by! Yay for young Canadian docs setting up shop in the US and A!

Sorry, Danwhy. I wasn't sure you were serious. There really is a Canada Day?! And it's the same week as the American Independence Day? Well, then happy merry Canada Day to you. To devotees of Michael Moore, I offer a link to the political thread on socialized medicine, a disappearing concept. Susan

The internet makes me cry. Regardless, I spent my entire Canada Day with a bad hangover. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad hangover. Twenty-four hour hangover. Won't be mixing alcohols all day and eating blue filet mignon again for a long time.

We celebrate Canada Day, our national holiday, on the anniversary of the date that the British North America Act came into effect, which officially established Canada as a country (even though Britain still maintained control of a bunch of governmental functions, and we didn’t have all of our provinces and territories in on the deal yet). We didn’t fully patriate our constitution until 1982, though by then Britain’s influence was largely ceremonial. I live in Quebec, so in addition to this long weekend for Canada Day, I also had a long weekend last week for Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24), when Quebec celebrates its independence / officially pretends to be a nation. In a typically Canadian display of passive-aggressive behavior, I'd like to announce my intentions to refrain from cluttering the upcoming Fourth of July thread with a dirty laundry list.

Ya know, Donald Sutherland's former father-in-law is the one who brought socialized medicine to Canada!

Most of Quebec's population is frantically busy moving their stuff that day. You can still see the old furniture lying around the streets, here in Montreal. As for the St-Jean, it's mostly an excuse to get drunk and be "proud" though I still can't figure what there is to be proud of. Socialized medicine is cool, if you can organize it. There is an incredible waste of ressources here, I must say, and it's not for nothing professionals choose to go live elsewhere, although this is something Quebecers refuse to see for what it is: total incompetence of the powers-that-be.

Happy Day After Canada Day, which we call the 4th of July!
Actually, danwhy and all others from Canada, a most happy Canada Day to you all. I love Canada. Lived in the Toronto area for a while. Best city I ever lived in.
Now, Nuart/Susan, you grew up in the Detroit area, as did I. Remember, across the river from that sleepy little town called Windsor, Ontario, Canada? (Home of the greatest Indian restaurants in the Detroit area!).
Do you remember a little celebration that seemed to occur over 3-4 days at the riverfront, by Cobo Hall? It was the Freedom Festival, and was a jointly shared celebration between our Canadian neighbors and us. Hudson's paid for a huge fireworks display from barges in the Detroit River. Went there every year as a kid. Watched it once from the Canadian side.
OK, that was fun. It's not all socialized medicine and its failings, which by the way, Shrillary has raised again this week as her flagship issue...
Hey, if Michael Moore has his way, we'll normalize trade with Cuba and we can all go to Havana for our medical care. Get some nice stogies to smoke while we wait for our lung cancer operation, yes?
Oh, I digress, to our northern neighbors, have at it! And drink a sip or two of that fabulous Alberta Springs Rye Whisky, maybe followed by a Molson Export Ale. Dang... wanna be in Canada now....
