Out of all the films discussed on this page I never see Eraserhead being talked about. What is the general consensus on this film. Personally, I hated it and only just managed to finish the film. Except Dune, it is the only film of Lynch's that I didn't love.

I thought it was excellent the first time I saw it, but on subsequent viewings it hasn't been all that interesting.
So a bit of a novelty movie, I suppose.

It's fun in small doses, but can get old.  Pretty much like most of his stuff, actually.  This is why we need chapter stops.  :)

No love for Henry, eh?

Eraserhead is brilliant in its simplicity. Sometimes I am just profoundly creeped out by it, though.

YMMV, of course.

Erasehead to me is the type of movie you have to be "in the mood for". Its a dark movie that takes an exceptional movie goer to sit down for. Its not for everyone!

What do you love about it? The atmosphere? The story? The acting?

I love it too, for these reasons:

The sound design, the baby, Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Mr and Mrs X, the chickens, Man in the Planet, Lady in the Radiator (and the music), um...the Eraserhead. I love the fact that it was such a labor of love - that he spent so long working on it and managed to make scenes tie together even though some of them were shot years apart! I love the look of the movie - sometimes noirish, sometimes neo-realist. I see it as less like a conventional movie and more like a bona fide artwork - and that, coupled with the piecemeal way it was put together, means that it has more in common with INLAND EMPIRE than probably any of Lynch's other films. It's a very cool movie, but it has aged a little, for sure. Although it has also been the inspiration for many a film-maker, so part of the reason it looks aged is similar to the reason why Citizen Kane looks aged - its innovations have been incorporated into the mainstream.

Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

To "get" Eraserhead, see it, I'll say it again--- IN A MOVIE THEATER!!! There's a great  30th Anniversary article in this month's Bizarre, with thoughts on it by Frank Black (The Pixies covered In Heaven) & a bit on where the mysterious deleted scenes may have ended up...   I have a treasured 8x10 autographed by Charlotte Stewart, Catherine Coulson (who TOOK the famous shot) &  the late Jack Nance, who wrote "In heaven, Henry loves you".

Everytime I watch this film it's always quite an experience! It's the typical movie you have to watch at midnight, when it's dark and the house is so quiet and you get your worthy concentration. You really get sucked in, like almost all the other pictures from Lynch's bunch.

My sympathies if you live somewhere that this is never an option.  I've seen Eraserhead multiple times (first time, the year it was released: 1977) & the ONLY time it disappointed was when I watched it on video. It was made in the pre-video age & intended to be experienced in a cinema. Watching it on TV's kinda like watching a virtual roller coaster on your computer. My 2 cents...

yeah why not.. they play it in the Paradiso cinema in Warsaw quite frequently :-))) You're most welcome!

But even though I am absolutely convinced about superiority of watching EVERYTHING in the cinema - I must admit the first time I saw Eraserhead was on video and I was totally stunned. For some time I considered it one of the most admirable Lynch masterpieces. After some time and after a few more watchings my enthusiasm went slightly down... I think I'd still give it five stars for five but - perhaps a 5 witha minus?

The problem I always had with Eraserhead is that it's the only Lynch film where I fail to find a satisfying interpretation of the mysteries.I came across many but neither eally made it for me. Either they went too far for me or were too shallow.

On the other hand what I always found its best quality is the total mastery of film matter. The almost 5 year process of filmmaking paid off - the film is perfect and flawless in each and every detail.

But as for the meanings, as much as I haven't got a satisfying interpretation of particular scenes etc., I do appreciae the overall feeling of the film. I can sense something very disturbing - not in Henry's nightmares (that would be rather boring) but in the vision of the world shown in the film... it's a very uncanny world and shows off some moral anxiety.

Something is very WRONG about this world, and this is in itself thought-provoking enough for me.

Surely it's easy compared to INLAND EMPIRE!

Eraserhead blew my mind when I first saw it and it remained my favourite Lynch film for many years, until repeated viewings of Mulholland Drive just nudged it into second place.

ERASERHEAD is so like my life it's weird. I swear I went out with that mary x lady. Only I know the meaning of the worm.

I don't have a dead baby in my flat though.

Best film ever. This automatic spacing when you hit the enter key is ANNOYING.
