I was wondering if anyone had purchased this book and  if so how it compared to the book Images which in my opinion was printed on bad quality paper

"The Air is on Fire" is an  album of music by David that is not out yet, but I have an advanced

early copy. If it's a book too, I wasn't aware. The 7 track disc is quite powerful.

On another note, I've also aquired a "s/t" album by the Dale Cooper Quartet & Dictaphone.  It sounds like Badlamenti

only more ambient and electronic, in good way.

Wow! I'm really glad I didn't end up buying it from the Fondation Cartiers! This is a great drop in price.

Hatter, I don't own it yet but I liked the paper Images was printed on. The Air is on Fire a good deal thicker and should come with an audio portion, which I think will make it worth it.  If you check out video of the show on youtube, there is a whole bunch of cool stuff.

littleotik, is this the cd you got? If so, does it include music from that concert from the Fondation?

well i got both books and the cd. the air is on fire book is the catalog of the amazing art exibition lynch did in Paris. it's much bigger and better from "images" it's a real dive into Lynch's world.

the cd is the soundtrack of that exhibition. it's mostly industrial ambiant sounds. very moody and Lynchy.

You can see the CD case here

The tracks don't appear to have individual titles. The CD wasn't available when I went to the exhibition but from what I remember the soundtrack was reminiscent of the Eraserhead CD - very industrial.

I ran from the noise and the silence, from the traffic on the streets

I have this CD and I can confirm that there aren't any titles to the tracks.

John, now that I have answered a question from you ;-) could you answer a question from me... ?

It's been waiting in this thread since some time...

QUOTE: John, if you're still around here, I'd love to have an answer too !

I have been disappointed by the lack of imagination in the surround mix of IE. Almost nothing happens in the rears. The quality of the soundtrack is amazing, as usual, but is that mix really discrete ? I doubt it !

i've seen IE three times, including one in the only THX-certified theater in France (besides that, by far the best sounding theater I know in Paris). And even there, there was no surround feel, which I missed a lot.

Btw, just a quick answer to the post I quote, this can't be coming from the DV. Sound and picture are (hopefully !) processed individually

ANSWER: Some of the sound came from the DV cameras. I would wire the actors with Audio Technica wireless lavaliers and plug the receivers, which were belt packs, into the cameras. But the SONY Digital Audio converters in the camera are totally crap, they overshoot, they ring, they sound terrible. So after a while, I would take a mobile ProTools 002 rig out on set, with a laptop and a firewire drive, and record everybody to their own tracks, therefore, not having to mix the sound on set, but presrving each actor on their own track. It's laborious, but it's the best way to get good dialogue. So then a DV Stream of the picture edit gets shown in the mixing theatre, playing through ProTools off a firewire drive, and you mix the movie in great big ProTools sessions.

As to 'Inland Empire', I did no mixing on that film, only part of the location sound for the first year and a half. As to surrounds, David has a 'ten percent' rule. No more than ten percent of the sound can go into the surrounds, because "the action takes place on the screen!" I did manage to get some nice surround stuff into "The Straight Story", like the car that drives through the theatre and all the trucks surround Alvin as he pulls into a small town. I recorded those truck sounds at the Castaic Truck Stop, near my old house, and layered them up to be menacing and ominous. Alvin was surrounded by them. On the DVD remix of "Wild At Heart" I got some stuff into the surrounds and it passed David's inspection. That was a fun one to do, because I had to make new sounds for the fight at the beginneing, to get good subwoofer elements and things like that. I had lunch with Randy Thom last year and he has a copy and liked the surround mix I did.

I like to use surround a lot more than DAvid, so watch for my new projects.

That was some interesting stuff, Mr Neff! I'm very interested in Sound Design in the digital world.

So, if I understand you right, you did a lot of the recording on INLAND EMPIRE, but none of the mixing?

Someone on a different forum claimed that there were filter sweeps added to The Locomotion - is this true. I'm fairly familiar with what can be achieved with a filter sweep, and I didn't noticed any applied to that track.

Cheers

TITG

Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

A big thanks John for your VERY informative answer.

I will definitely look forward to your next projects. As I had written months ago, I'm very pleased with your 5.1 remixes on David's DVD's, despite David's "10% rule" (which I was unaware of). In comparison to your mixes, I really think that the IE surround mix must have been produced with a "1% rule" :-(

It's strange that David doesn't like more surround... I totally support the fact that what's going on with the rears must NOT distract the spectators from what happens on the screen, but it strikes me that David doesn't seem to see that he could really take advantage of more music - for instance - in the rears. His music soundtrack, especially the original scores from A. Badalamenti (not on IE, I know), could be even more haunting and immersive if it was more spread around the room.

Sorry for the short off-topic.

Anyway, the soundscapes coming from everywhere at the Air is on Fire exhibition was absolutely delightful. Immersive experience into a dark and beautiful world... Being a Parisian, I went there 3 times and it was always a thrill.

Necrobumping this thread.

The Air is On Fire, and Polish Night Music, come up frequently on my mp3 player's shuffle that I'm rediscovering them, appreciating them even more.

They are daily life soundtrack staples. "Gray" is my favorite track.

Feeling the urge to listen to them, and the interviews that come with The Air is On Fire book, while I peruse it again.

I'd love to hear what your favorite bits from the book are.
