Cannes 60th edition started out with a surprise short film (3 minutes long) by David Lynch dedicated to the festival, called "Absurda", taking place in an empty theatre. Giant scissors appear above it and the screen then is filled with menancing dark clouds . Darkness and anguish in the air. A threatening voice and then a woman's scream of terror. A dancer in a red dress slowly takes shape  and finally says "I always loved dancing".

I didn't see this, but my professor is a critic and he attends the festival. He said it was pretty awesome and alienating to be at the opening ceremony of Cannes. Though, he wasn't able to state if it was shot on Dv or if it was back to 35 mm. He said it looked pretty high-def, maybe he used an HDCamera this time.

I hope some of you finds photos on the web, I would love to see this short some day.

Somebody kindly posted a link to it on dugpa.com. Cant copy and paste it right now as my computer is playing up. But if you go dugpa.com forums and onto the Absurda thread you will find it there. I really like it. Quality isnt brilliant but you get the idea.

Wow, that was pretty disturbing... I don't know why, but something about it really freaked me out. Very cool stuff.

Here is the link:

Didn't thrill me though. I hope he's not losing his inspiration. The mix of bad sound, bad image and distracting french subtitles quality made it almost unwatchable for me. I hate to say this.

Plus, the idea of the empty theatre is a rip off of IE, and the scenes of the empty theatre in IE look a little as a rip off from Donnie Darko, that's the only movie I saw in which there's a scene taking place in an empty dark theatre. Of course, Donnie Darko is a rip off of so many other films that this is like chinese boxes.

David, you really need to get some new material! Sorry to be so harsh.

Visually it's rather interesting, but the dialogue reminds me of a Silent Hill script: allusions to vaguely menacing events delievered by bad actors.

Well, damn, Logic, that really narrows it down -- you're talking about half the action ever to occur in any Lynch film! [/Albert]

The quality of these particular line readings made me want to upchuck a great abundance of food.

I like reading this because fans here aren't afraid to state their discontent/disturbance.

I found INLAND EMPIRE pretty unwatchable for many scene, especially the first hour or so due to the disturbing and menacing nature of it all and the sheer nonsensical aspects which were many. I have not felt this before with other Lynch works and it makes me wonder if he really needs a Mark Frost or THE MARK FROST to tie him down a bit.

Of course I did like many parts of INLAND EMPIRE but I did totally understand why it could and probably should have eben edited down to two hours and lost many of the drawn out scenes of menacing but basically meaningless dialogue scenes.

This new short looks like it has all the problems but none of the qualities (humour, brightness, optimism etcetera) of IE's 3 hour endurance test.

Why are we discussing whether Lynch is losing his talent over a 3 minute short? It's actually better than most of his short films...

MMmh... I disagree. Darkened room was way better. At least there was a plot-line - although thin - mentioned.
