It's not that I think Lost Highway has less fabulous scenes than Fire... but somehow I predict it will be easier and there won't be so many choices as in case of the previous movie.

For me an outstanding number one, being the desert scene, especially with the moment "and what the fuck is your name".

Also, a couple of scenes have to be considered where Lynch reveals his genius in using popular music in film... perhaps he had never been better in this area? I Put A Spell On You striptease, Rammstein in the Lost Highway motel, This Magic Moment...

And I'm pretty sure the swimming pool party scene will find its way to my top five.

Let's go!

1. Alice's seduction of Pete at the garage.

Love this whole scene. Pete's whole 'Will I won't I' and Patricia Arquette generally being a sexy bitch. The music completes this scene too. 'Hollywood Sunset' is so approriate for the early evening LA ambience.

2. Mystery Man at the party. 'As a matter of fact, i'm there right now!' - need i say more....

3. Fred & Renee's bad sex and the 'post coital pat on the back'. *cringe*

4. MM & Mr eddy's phone call to Pete. 'Just wanna make sure your alright Pete...' Robert Loggia is hilarious in that scene.

5. Pete and Alice have sex in the dessert...then the dawn of realisation 'You'll never have me...'

P.S I totally agree with you about the great choice of music. The soundtrack CD is well worth the money!

The entire opening scene, from Fred pulling on his cigarette to the shot of him looking awkwardly out the window.

Fred and Renee having sex, followed by Fred's dream.

Fred's discussion with the Mystery Man at Andy's party.

Fred and the last tape.

The cottage in the desert materializing out of fire.

1. The "You'll never have me" moment.

2. Pete in the hallway that becomes a hotel corridor, nose bleeding, Rammstein,...

3. The Mystery Man at the party.

4. The beginning of the film, very calm yet very disturbing too.

5. Car lights, love making, "Song to the siren",...

I have a problem with cathegorising elements of that desert scene. Aren't Song to the Siren and You'll Never Have Me parts of the same scene? For me they are but here Gordon splits them... And then what about when Mystery Man shows up and talks about Alice Who. Still the same scene or the next one?

How do you "feel" these sequences? As one homogenic scene or a few separate ones?

Anyway it goes they will take the whole top of my list.

ad. Let's Roque's choices:

Alice's seduction of Pete at the garage - the "skip dinner" moment has perhaps more sexual tension than any other Lynch has ever shot...

'post coital pat on the back' - BRR. Just to think of it makes me feel horrible! Incredible.. pat.

MM & Mr eddy's phone call to Pete. 'Just wanna make sure your alright Pete...' Robert Loggia is hilarious in that scene. - well hilarious but this scene is most frightening!!!

P.S.

You could staple a leather jacket to a surfboard and just wave it around in the middle section of Lost Highway, for all the difference Balthazar Getty makes to my life.

Again making my own calls without others' influence...

1. This Magic Moment

2. I Put a Spell on You and how it suddenly stops

3. Fred meets the Mystery Man

4. "You'll never have me."

5. The Ending or is it the beginning. Anyway Dick Laurent is still dead.

okay. I looked at the others and had to give props to JVS because I love the "Fred and the last tape" sequence too. The whole walking into darkenss and the overall creepiness of this scene really gets under your skin. And Gordon for mentioning the hallway/Rammstein sequence. I almost put that one on my list.

As the one single member of the jury I hereby decide that:

the Song to the Siren/ You will never have me Love Scene will be treated as a separate scene,
and so will the following scene from the moment the man rises as Fred again and meets the Mystery Man who consequently chases him with the camera

I have spoken

But where are more votes?!

Last year at the fest was the very first time that I saw this movie--and on the big screen and everythin'!! :) I remember sitting there, just going...guh. LOL

1. This Magic Moment

2. Meeting the Mystery Man -- it's just creepy! "Call me!" "I'm there right now..." <Shiver>

3. The car chase scene--I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a movie in a LONG long time...

4.  The striptease to "I Put A Spell On You"

5. "You'll never have me..."

I love love LOVE the soundtrack...deep and weirdly (yet gorgeously) twisted, just like the movie.

1. Fred back from being Pete in the desert... Alice who?... and what the fuck is YOUR NAME!? ... - stands out very far for me and quite certainly is in my top three Lynch scenes ever.

2. Desert again... Song to the Siren, you will never have me

3. I Put a Spell On You striptease

4. Call me! - Fred meets Mystery Man

5. This Magic Moment

:-( ..... and I so wanted to include Rammstein and the bleeding nose... and Pete's phone conversation with Mr Eddy and Mystery Man.

Surprisingly few votes came this time... Wonder why?

For the first time we have an ex-aequo at number one, followed by yet another ex-aequo.
For the first time in a long time there are scenes in top five which have not gained ten points. Actually, only three scenes got a really considerable amount of votes.

Even more surprisingly I found that no one except for me voted for the "what the fuck is your name" scene! Not only has it happened for the first time that my favourite scene from a film isn't in the top five - moreover, it's for me probably the best of all Lynch scenes from all the films we discussed so far  Only the "don't be a good neighbour" from Blue Velvet is a possible match for me...

Anyway - here's the top five Lost Highway scenes according to this topic:

1/ 2. Fred meets Mystery Man at the party
and The sex scene in the desert: Song to the Siren/ You will never have me ................ 26 pts. each

3. This Magic Moment ............................................................................................ 19 pts.

4/ 5. Mr Eddy's car chase
and I Put a Spell On You striptease ......................................................................... 9 pts.

1. This Magic Moment.  Captures that feeling of lust perfectly.

2. Mystery Man meets Fred at party - scariest phone call in a film.

3. You'll never have me - the last straw of sanity is consumed by despair.  Arquette has a great body, but I hated her hair in this movie.

4. The videotapes, especially the one watching Fred and Renee sleeping and then the murder.

5. I Put a Spell on You - Manson, Arquette, gun - dark.

*forgot how slooooooooooooooow the first half of this movie is (the pacing)

*noticed I had a Lynch movie marathon this weekend?

1. The break-in/Mr. Dent Head

2. Fred telling Renee about his dream

3. Guard Henry (!!!)

4. Slow dance to "Eye"

5. Actually, the Mystery Man's "Her name is Renee. If she told you her name's Alice, she's lying" gives me chills every time.

Good call on "Eye", 12rainbow, that song kicks ass.

1.when pete's parents stop Sheila from telling him what actually happened on the night of his disappearance..

2. Mr. Eddy's reaction to tailgating/road rage scene... ("I want you to get a driver's manual !I want you to study that motherfu**er!")...

3.Fred's sleep paralysisesque episode ...

4.final credits- bowie's "i'm deranged"  (reminds me of lynch's commentary in the abominable glick- about the idea of a dark road...

5. a three way tie between mr. eddy, the mm, and pete's 3 way phone call and fred's encounter w/ the mm at andy's house party ...( "We've met before, haven't we ?"... & pete and Jack Nance's conversation about the obscure fred style sax solo on the  radio in the garage...

I would definitely vote as #1 the "what the fuck is your name" scene. If you throw in the part before that, "sex in the nuclear headlights" and "you'll never have me", then I hardly feel the need to mention other scenes at all.

If I must,

#2 Andy's party w/ Mr. Mystery

#3 After the party, wandering around the house. There's a flash of light upstairs. The phone rings.

#4 Pete's parents try to talk to him about "that night"

#5 At Andy's house again, from the terrible porno on the wall, to the insane "trip to the bathroom".

I could name many more. LH is my all time favorite lynch project, and I feel it is the last one that he really completed. MH feels like an aborted TV project (and it is) and IE feels like a slappted together collection of aborted dl.com projects (and it is). Only LH was envisioned as a single film, without the need to graft on some sort of ending or cohesive material.

I know this will sound a little off-thread, but since most of you identify favorite/pivotal parts of this movie with musical pieces in it, I should conclude this is the most videoclip-like movie Lynch has ever done (taking out Industrial Symphony of course). I mean this in a good way. Everyone agree?

A bit of a late comer on this one...have been rewatching recently, so thought it'd be a good time.

My 5 Favs

1) The Return to Andy's : Pete/Alice rob Andy, the porno movie on the wall (Hell I love that image and the music/vocal that accompanies it Hierate Mich, but I'm a pervert so that makes sense)...to Pete nosebleed upstairs, Rammstein.

2) The 'lame fuck' back patting scene, humiliation etc...I love the look on Arquettes' face even more than Fred's.

3) Meeting 'Mystery Man' @ the party...gotta love the way the whole party dissolves into the background during the chatter.

4) The return from 'the party'....Fred's walk down the 'impossibly dark' corridor to the mirror, "Where are you etc" to the final video tape.

5) Pete meeting Alice @ Arnie's....including up to the 'taxi phone call'...she's impossibly hot & gotta love the sexual tension!!!

Special mentions for...

the spider crawling up the wall and the moths in the lamp.

the first dialogue, where 'reading' is discussed (i love that part but not sure why?).

the desert sex & dust in headlights...for obvious reasons.

the video montage shown to Mr Eddy just before he is killed...more perversion for my goodself.

Did anyone notice the metaphorical 'gun' (sex pistol) that Alice hands to Pete just as they leave for the desert...where she says "Stick this in your pants"....when they get out of the car, it is not in his pants and is left on the car seat (which Lynch expressly points out with a camera pan)...and this all leads to the sexual impotence aspect again and Pete/Fred being rejected?  Just thought I'd put it out there.
