Hello all,

I still haven't seen IE (it will never come to Croatia most probably), and I was wondering if there's any chance to be able to see it in Madrid (or some other place in Spain?) I'm going to a business trip to Madrid in a week and will be staying there for about 3 weeks, so I was hoping to catch it if possible.

So the question is to anyone from Spain, is there a place I can see IE now? I know it was released in Spain a few months ago, but I have to ask...

Thanks.

Yes, and it's on this weekend!!!

But before I begin jumping around out of pure happiness, there is a "VOS" sign for it - please tell me it signifies subtitles and not dubbing?

I think VOS means "versiòn original subtitolata", meaning it could be the English language film with spanish subtitles. That's weird anyway, because I know that in Spain they use to dub every film in their language like they do in many other European countries.

There are cinemas mostly in our big cities that show movies in their original language (yes, that's what VOS means, subtitled original version), like Verdi in Barcelona...

Yes, now big cities give people the possibility to watch a movie in its original language also at the theatre. But since WWII it became a tradition in France, Italy, Germany and Spain to dub films in the local language because it was a dictatorial obligation to erase any kind of foreign-ness during those early years. Then, when everything was over, this craft was cultivated and now we have the best film dubbers in the whole world - Italy and Spain are at the first place.

Giancarlo Giannini was praised by Kubrick, who had the chance to watch The Shining in the Italian version and congratulated with him for his dubbing version of Jack Nicholson. Ingmar Bergman praised the man responsible for The Seventh Seal 's adapation, which he found even better than the original Swede script.

So, as you can see, there's so much history around dubbing.

I hope you americans know about this world and become interested

Heh, I wonder what Kubrick thought about the spanish dubbing of THE SHINING... It was really terrible...

That's just fantastic, not dubbed :) I can't really understand dubbing, except for kids of course. I mean, it's 21st century people...

But the important thing is - finally I'll get to see this movie. I'm glad now I haven't yet read a single thing about it, so it's still a complete mystery for me. Went to the theatre today and got my ticket for tomorrow. Didn't want to take any chance with the tickets, not after the Venice episode, huh...

So, tomorrow is the big day :) Cheers!!!

Chandra, there's such things called as 'cultural differences'. Probably wherever you live is not a place where seeing a movie in English causes big comprehension problems. Guess you're lucky!

Enjoy the movie tomorrow.

I saw IE twice and at the end first time I wanted to puke my soul, second time I took a long pee. LOL

What a physical experience, really!

That's one of the reasons why I prefer watching movies in DVD than going to the theater... DVD gives you the possibility of watching the film in the original language. Back in the old VHS days it was really hard to me to watch VOS movies, they weren't in the cinemas, very few were shown on TV, etc.

mr.silencio, it's not about cultural differences really, it's just about the originality of art. I would never go see INLAND EMPIRE or any other movie for that matter, were it dubbed in Croatian language. For me, it's just not the same movie any more, and I have the same opinion about books also....and I was always very picky even with subtitled movies, when the subtitles wrongly interpreted the original message. Oh, well :) That's a whole different thread I guess.

On to the movie. It's brilliant!!! Like Mulholland Drive on steroids ;-) I miss certain Lynchian humoristic elements, but apart from that, I loved every second of it. Too bad I couldn't understand the sequences in Polish, but it's no big deal...The mix of emotions which the movie produces at times is almost too much to handle. Lynch at his best, I would say. Sent shivers down my spine more than once, and I'm definitely going to see it again tomorrow :))

Now, finally I'll go and read all the threads about the movie. I guess I'll be finished in a few hours!

Cheers from Madrid!

Edit: a few hours passed indeed, 1:30am now and only went through the main "discussion" thread...I'll definitely look at the movie from a different perspective tomorrow, some very nice thoughts inside.
