I kept noticing that the chalkboard had this funky map of what looked like Twin Peaks. There's I think like three episodes where it's there and you keep wondering what it is and then when you see the glyphs there it's all so obvious! I just kept waiting for Andy to knock his head on the board and have it flip over to reveal the original map!

Serisously! It was so obvious to me that the petroglyph was a map.  Here we have possibly one of the best law men ever, Cooper that is, and he can't even think for a second it's a map.  This is the guy who noticed the faint reflection of a motorcycle in Laura Palmers eye, and he can't tell a freaking map?! It's a little inconsistent with the character i think.

Actually, I'm not complaining about Coop's inability - he's got other things on his mind (i.e. Annie). It's just that while watching the show I kept on thinking what's that weird map doing there - and then finally seeing a reason for it.

Before the petroglyph was discovered a normal map of the town can be seen drawn in the chalkboard. The explanation is that they were marking on the map all the places Laura visited hours before she died (such as Blue Pine Lodge for Josie's english lessons and of course Sparkwood and 21, Jacques cabin and the traincar). You can see those marks in the map and even a scene with Lucy holding a pointer...

However, it's clear that all the scenes regarding that were cut (though they are in the script).

It was obvious to me too, but I wasn't really surprised Cooper didn't get it.

What I'm getting at is: is Cooper really that good? He's amazing in some respects, with razor-sharp insights. But he doesn't even really question Leland's bizarre behaviour, a lot of clues pass him by, and he needs a lot of help from the Giant to get to BOB, and then it's after he strikes again. Not really the pinnacle of detective work. Wouldn't it be standard procedure to check Leo's alibi for the night Teresa Banks was killed? Instead he researches Leo's illegal u-turns.

Cooper's detective work is wildly variable and unreliable, in my view. But that could be a thread in itself.

Then there is his excessive force at Dead Dog farm to consider. How did he expect Jean Renault to go for his gun with that tray in his hands...

I'm interested in this map-marking that has been mentioned. I have seent he map on the board, but havent noticed marks... certainly not Lucy with a pointer (unless you mean in season 1).

so where does this happen?

I think that the major theme running through the entire series is the slow-but-steady deterioration of Cooper's mind.  McLaughlin (spelling?) does such a great job of subtley hinting at this throughout season two.  Cooper's loss of will doesn't occur entirely in the Lodge; it's a slow downhill slide from the moment he arrives in Twin Peaks.  You can really see how his detective skills dull with each passing episode.  I think it's really interesting to watch.

There's a great article that analyses Cooper's character development throughout the series, and poses the theory that it's the prescence of Windom Earle bringing back his past mistakes to mind (and history repeating itself through Annie), that allows for the detrioration of his mystic and "feminine" side. This also accounts for his confused and disoreintated behaviour in the Black Lodge in the series finale, whereas before he displayed brilliant deductive abilities from his original dream in the Red Room. Here's the link:  http://www.geocities.com/~mikehartmann/papers/detective.html A good read.

Geoff, that's from ep.8 in the scene where they are reconstructing Laura's murder and Andy gets mad at Albert. You can see on-screen Lucy with the pointer and (barely) the marks on the map.

Yeah... Annie was responsible a lot for Coop's inability to concentrate on his work. The brave hero Cooper we saw in season 1 was totally different from Cooper in season 2,and mostly after he met Annie.Well,of course it's impossible to be completely fearless ,but unexpectedly Coop became vulnerable and weak when he found out Windom was back. And he was so confused in the black lodge...he just didn't know what to do.He couldn't face his shadow side, his fears...I was almost sure BOB would beat him...soon or later.

I just always thought it was funny that the dumbest character in Twin Peaks (Andy) was the one to figure the map out furst, what does that say about everyone else?  Andy is an idiot souvent!

Created these on my computer with the DVD in the drive and used Windows Media Player Classic which is available for free on the web. Used their Save Image menu- this is as large as I could get the images with this save feature.

If someone can point me to a better shot of map 1 - tell me where it is and I'll make a new image.

You know, it would seem that the Giant is a symbol of one of the Twin Peaks. Who's the guy on his left? The dwarf? I thought he was Mike's arm. Note how the mountain has two peaks one smaller than the other just like the two figures.

Maybe a bad thought about the Giant/Peak relationship. It looks like the Glyph map is offset to the right relative to the Twin Peaks map. I think the vertical lines in the center of map 2 (Glyph) refer to The Falls and that's the lake below them. The lake on map 1 (TP) looks to be that circle towards the right side. So, the river which is on the right side of map 1 is centered on map 2.

Cooper is Laura's compliment and they seem to have a psychic link even before her death and his arrival in town.  I think he falters somewhat in the second season because BOB is hovering about him just as he did with Laura.  With she and Leland gone, he sets in on Cooper and with that influence comes the same innate darkness in Cooper that's revealed in Laura and Leland--- some of which may not wholly be BOB's doing.  With Earle loose, the same dynamic that Laura experienced with Leland happens to Cooper:  a monstrous father/authority figure begins to merge with a nightmare abuser.

Coop looks like he's about to spit a stream of water through his teeth at Harry.

Thanks for the great shot of the petroglyph/map! I've been looking for that. I believe The White Lodge is a seperate place in a different location, so I've been wanting to study the map to see if it might be there.

Now that I look at it, there are several odd things on the map, but the most likely thing that would be The White Lodge is the symbol that looks like a "star" on the other side of the waterfall, a double circle with 8 rays.

BTW, on IMDb I have 2 accounts, one called wallydanger, and the other is TheManWhoFellToEarth.

:)  When I was a lad, we called that action "gleeking."

Incidentally, here's a photo from LynchPosters of the actual cave painting before Andy did his "full scale rendering."  It's quite different in some places, as you can see.
