I know this is very disputed, but who is really that mystery man Laura's talking about in one of her tapes to Jacoby? She said "This guy can really light my F.I.R.E....as in a red corvette" and at first I thought she meant Leo,but she also said "If I tell you his name,he wouldn't be such a mystery man anymore, but you might be history man" ! She said he tried to kill her a couple of times...and Leo didn't try to kill her! Was she talking about BOB then? Or is that another dead end...

No, it's totally Leo.  As for trying to kill her, I think Laura might have been a little over dramatic.  But anyway, I'm sure their rough sex play might have given her that impression... or the cocaine.  :)

I've been thinking of this too, because in the second season (I forget which episode... 8 or 9?), James doesn't believe Leo was the "mystery man", and then proceeds to tell Truman about Laura saying "do you want to play with BOB". That's a strange scene, because it seems like it contradicts the info from the first season. It might have been since Frost and Lynch wanted to move the focus from Leo to BOB. Lynch showed with the log cabin scene in Fire Walk With Me that he didn't mind contradicting the series.

oh look, and who has just been telling me off for sounding too categorical at times?

But don't worry, I prefer it when you say "it's totally Leo" and I can reply "no man, you're totally wrong!" he he.

Well, though it's not exactly the case. Perhaps it is only Leo. But I share ivalinda's doubts because as much as the red corvette suggests Leo, the overall tone of Laura's speech could suggest there was more to it. Hmm.

Well perhaps at the time, Laura thought that Leo was BOB. We see in FWWM that she didn't know right up until the very end who BOB really was (or rather, really was inhabiting).

Hey, I was just about to suggest that! Great minds, etc.

This is also interesting because it shows how conflicted Laura had become. She "likes" both Leo and Bob - both evil (one in a more trivial sense, the other in a grander sense) - and this goes hand in hand with what Leland says at the dinner table in FWWM: "how do you know what she likes?". Laura is losing it, and she's starting to identify with Bob and thus the molesting father. This is the strongest and scariest aspect of Twin Peaks as a whole to me (I'm a FWWM fan).

I'd say that "red Corvette" thing is just a red herring to make the viewers to suggest that Leo might be the killer. In Laura's point of view it might be so that she gets a huge turn-on from Leo's vehicle (and maybe from nice cars in general). When she has to describe how she feels about this mystery man, she just says like it is: the man turns her on just like Leo's car does.

Maybe, but at least I didn't imply that the original idea or its creator were stupid; that would be the key difference there, Bobby.  :)

Regarding Laura's mystery man... yeah, I can see that it does have some nice BOB cross-over.  I still can't shake the assocition with the red corvette, though.  It doesn't make sense that she'd mention that unless she meant Leo.  Even if, as has been said, cars really turn her on.

Maybe not in real life but in television that makes total sense and spices things up a bit. A red herring to keep us on our toes. :)

It seems to me like a red herring that wasnt originally meant to be a red herring, but came to be one through an authorial oopsie.  :)  But I guess that's a cop-out.  :)

The series loved to double (or multiply characters), so in a sense BOB/Leland/Bobby/Jacques/Leo all overlap into one nebulous bad man in Laura's mind, with James acting as their foil.

Got up early, found something's missing/ My only name/ No one else sees but I got stuck/ And soon forever came

That's why I think Laura was talking about BOB...but she was just afraid to tell that to Jacoby ---> "well,if i tell you his name,he wouldn't be such a mystery man anymore, but you might be history man"...Remember what Harold said to Maddy and Donna, when Maddy was looking for the diary --- "are you looking for secrets?" and then...he said something like...a secret that can kill you"...don't remember the exact quote. So maybe that's why Laura didn't want Jacoby to know about BOB.She wanted to keep him out of this! And that "F.....I....R....E..." ,the way she accentuated it...BOB is connected with FIRE.

This might not be the exact quote but I think it's pretty close to it:
"Are you looking for secrets? Do you want to know what the ultimate secret is? The secret of knowing who killed you."

I've always found that quote extremely interesting. At first Harold tried to say to Laura that Bob isn't real. That he might just be in Laura's imagination. Then that scary face thing happened and I'm sure that as soon as Harold found out that Laura had been killed he would've thought about Bob in a different way. Laura knew she was eventually going to get killed by Bob and I'm sure she had shared that information with Harold. Laura knew her killer. That was Laura's secret. Now, Maddy and Donna were trying to find out who had killed Laura so when Harold caught them from stealing the diary, he became very angry and maybe thought something like if they are going to know Laura's secret, they are going to end up being in the same awful position that Laura was. After all, Harold thought he would be in a great danger if he'd show up to the world, show up to Bob. And as soon as Maddy and Donna would know about Bob, they would be in great danger too.

What makes the quote interesting the most is that Harold said "killed you." Just like if their death by getting murdered is eventually going to happen or as if it would have already happened, no matter what they would do to prevent it. And as you know, Maddy did get killed by Bob. It's almost like Harold knew that Maddy (and even maybe Donna) is going to have the same fate that Laura had.

I didn't want to start a new thread about this and didn't know where to post ,so...

Have you watched this : http://youtube.com/watch?v=hQ3ATHE-Mow

I think it's well done. The song really suits to the plot - Laura crying out for help, for Cooper, her rescuer, the man from her dreams, and the video is very good,too...that kiss is so romantic,as if Laura and Cooper were meant to be together ...but actually aren't they? Cooper saved her soul...and they will be together forever,as we see them in the end of FWWM ;P
