I am a huge Roy Orbison fan. And it seems that Lynch has a thing for him too. I read an article about when he was once driving with Kyle MacLachlan, and heard 'Crying' on the raio, but I cannot remember what he said about it. Anyone know?

He has only used two of Orbisons songs in his films, but both in a very strange and powerful way. Whilst Roy Orbison could be considered for that time as 'pop' , there is a certain depth to his songs which i guess Lynch felt as well. Any comments? Or am i just rambling?

I suppose Roy would have been classified as " Pop"or " Pop Rock". He had great pipes and his songs were emotional, deep and his sound was  pretty much unique. I know David Lynch went to one ( at least ) of his concerts in L A some years ago. Orbison could reach your heart and emotions like no body's business with excellent lyrics/music. And Orbison was a contemporary artist for Lynch as David was a teenager. Along with Roy's great talent he represented that late 50s 60s music period loved by David.

I know what you are speaking about Cooped infact the very same thing was on an interview on the biography channel a while back, David Lynch was on there talking about being a fan, later on, Orbisons' wife came on and talked about the scene from Blue Velvet with In Dreams.  I love the way that it is used too, I think more so with In Dreams, maybe mostly in the car scene where Frank's fury is unleashed and you see just how much of a nut-job he can really be..Eeek!  and of course Llorando..wow goes without saying.  It is clear to see Lynch's level of respect for Orbison just in the power of those two scenes and he could not have picked two better songs.

What I heard regarding Lynch and Orbison stories is that once upon a time during the making of BV, Lynch really wanted to use Crying, but didn't feel that it was quite right.  He decided that CCC was a better fit.  So later, he was pleased when RdelR's version fell into his lap as he was making MD.

read the book Lynch On Lynch, purty good book.

what david said:  "In Dreams" came about while we were in production for Blue Velvet. Kyle MacLachlan & I were on our way to Wilmington, North  Carolina, from New York City. we were going through Central Park on our way to the airport when over the cab's radio came "Crying" by Roy Orbison, & I'm listening to this song & said, That! I got to get that for Blue Velvet. When I got to Wilmington I sent somebody out to get Roy Orbison's greatest hits. I played "Crying" & then I played "In Dreams", & as soon as I did, I forgot about "Crying". "In Dreams" explained to me so much of what the film was all about.

Well, I can put in a cent or two on this subject...

David's first experience with Roy was regarding BV. Roy hated the scene and the use of his song in it, BUT, David got him to really see what it was about and then Roy loved it.

David produced "In Dreams" on one of Roy's last recordings, one in which he re-recorded all his hits so he could make some money. Monument records had gone bankrupt and Roy didn't make a dime from all his early recordings.

Dave thought the production was kind of weak on the album, as it was already underway when he came on board. The first day he worked with Roy, afternoon meditation time came. Dave excused himself, looking for a small room in which to meditate. Roy said, "You're a Meditator? So am I!" Roy practiced Transcendental Meditation, as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, as did Dave, so they meditated together.

Around the time of MD, Barbara Orbison came to the studio to hear "Llorando". She blessed it, and gave me a Roy Orbison autographed pullover.

I believe the only concert regarding Roy Orbison that Dave ever went to was his memorial concert at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. My old studio design office was above the Marquee. Dave had a limo take him there, and the driver was Harry Goaz, later to become famous as Deputy Andy in Twin Peaks.

OK, that's all I know for tonight.

That's not all I actually know.

Regarding RDR and "Llorando", her agent, Brian Loucks from CAA, brought her in to meet David as we were mixing "The Straight Story" and Dave was shooting the MD pilot, roughly February of 1999.

We sat talking for a few minutes, getting to know each other, and Dave said, "You're a singer - why don't you sing us something?"

She stood up, and was about to let loose, when David said, "No, there's a microphone on in that booth down there - sing it there". I had set up a Neumann U-47 mic and it was rigged to the recording system, with a little reverb.

Rebekah went into the booth and belted out "Llorando", just as you hear it in the film. It is the same take. The only editing I did was to take out a slight glitch during the last note, and added reverb for the theatre scene in MD.

Needless to say, we were all knocked out. David wrote her into the script after that. We were going to do an album together, and Rebekah and I worked on a lot of material, but it never happened. The only thing we finished was a beautiful song called, "No Stars". It's BlueBOB and RDR.

OK, good nite!

Johneff, what IS the status of No Stars? I know there's some of us who would love to see it released for public consumption...

Crap doesn't have to be holy - in fact, it rarely is.

Yes, this is me....

No Stars actually will probably never be released. Just like the Chrysta Bell stuff we did. Too many legal piles of holy horse poop.

Those who saw Rebekah and I do it at the Twin Peaks Festival some years ago got the real treat.

Thanks John. I love Polish Poem and really hope it gets released. It's a shame the music's such a legal minefield.

Usually these things fall into authorship and ownership percentage issues, and until such things are cleared up, the music cannot be released.
