I wanted to ask this question in its own thread, so bear with me, please. One thing that is very noticeable in the special features of the season 2 box set is that everyone is very crazy about complimenting Lynch for the show and saying what a genius he is, etc. etc., but hardly anyone even mentions Mark Frost and his efforts. Doesn't that kinda suck? ...And by "kinda," I mean TOTALLY? I mean, it is clear that Lynch lent, beyond the obvious plot and character elements from the pilot and his own episodes, a notoriety and esteem that clearly was attractive to actors and directors approached to contribute to the series... but it is also clear that it was not his work alone that propelled the series. This is especially true if we take the stories that he wasn't really around for much of the second season. People who haven't yet seen these special features will probably say "geesh, Geoff, lay off it, Lynch is a great man!" but dude... for real... watch them first. It is SERIOUSLY like "Lynch is a genius!" "Lynch is fabulous!" "I want to give Lynch analingus!" throughout most all of the interviews. I'm a fan of Lynch, but damn... there are limits to my vomit threshold. :) So my question is thus: do you think the set is so Lynch sycophantic (Lynchophantic) because of his contribution to the reproduction of the series on disc? The S1 set was somewhat the same, but not as blatant (plus, Lynch had more to do with S1 creatively, to my understanding, so it is perhaps more deserved).

They say that film is a director's medium while television is a producer's. Lynch made a big splash at the time, as a known and successful film director who "lowered" himself to work in television, which struck people as pretty unusual. Also, his personality as it comes through in interviews and so forth is relatively unique, so because of these things there's always been a tendency to think of "David Lynch's Twin Peaks", and those who have written and reported on the show for mass media have perpetuated this. So even all these years later, there's still probably a tendency to do this, even though we hardcore fans know better. Also, when I explain the show to friends who don't know it, it's pretty useless bringing up Mark Frost. "Who?" He wrote on Hill Street Blues, he's won Emmys! "Ummm..." Did you ever see Buddy Faro? "See what?" How about that old-timey golfing movie? "The one with Will Smith and Matt Damon?" No, the other one... "There's another one?"
Anyway, David Lynch made this show called Twin Peaks back in the late 80s...

I was listening to the episode six commentary track tonight with Caleb Deschanel and Harley Peyton, and Peyton was quick to give Frost plenty of credit. It was nice to hear about the "other" guy for a change. I'm not very familiar with Frost's non-Lynch-collaborative work either, except that he's been writing a lot of sci-fi novels lately (not to mention the Fantastic Four movie, which I've sucessfully avoided so far).

where do those Lynch-applauding commentaries come from? are they recent, I mean? Because if they are, perhaps it's just because after Twin Peaks Lynch's fame has not went down, while few people remember about Mark Frost anymore (at least that's my impression). People sometimes look at things from the perspective of now and thus fail to see the truth of what is history...
