The new issue of Sight and Sound has David Lynch on the cover and includes a five page INLAND EMPIRE article and interview. I had a suspicion they'd put DL on the cover when INLAND EMPIRE was released in the UK (March 9th apparently). The article's excellent (as ever). There's also a full-page advert for the Mulholland Drive special edition on the inside of the front cover.

Excellent cover, and probably the best article about INLAND EMPIRE I've read to date. I was a little disappointed with the interview between Figgis and Lynch though - I'd prefer to have just read them shooting the shit about their favourite music and cinema. Can't believe I missed that MD ad in my fever to read the article.

Here's the cover:

WH Smith had a few when I was in this afternoon so you should have no problem getting hold of a copy.

I agree the interview was a bit of a wasted opportunity but the article's the first I've read that wasn't excessively cloak and dagger. I've had my fill of people writing massive amounts about IE without actually saying anything. Well, anything worth reading, at least. The references to Axxon N. were manna from heaven and even the ubiquitous mention of people dressed as giant rabbits (yawn) was strangely interesting. Until now everything I've read has made the film sound disjointed and self-indulgent, which I'm fine with, but Roger Clarke's article left me feeling relieved. The explanation of how the rabbits (or should that be Rabbits?) work within the context of the film and the way Laura Dern's character is shaped by her surroundings have turned my excitement into hysteria.

Ha! - you're right to be hysterical! I saw this film a week ago, and have not been able to sleep properly since then, because I start thinking about the movie at every available opportunity!

Iar - you should definitely be able to pick one up at WH Smith.

By the way, I've contacted Optimum to find where and when IE will be showing throughout the UK. They said they'd send me an email this morning - I'll keep you posted

I shall maybe try WH Smiths in town then. Just means a nasty trip into the centre in the rain!

ThisIsTheGirl- Good idea on the e-mail to Optimum. Cant wait to hear what they say!

Edited to add: I just read the article and it was pretty good. There were some great bits in there, including the bits about going to sleep/waking up. Was a little annoyed at a couple of inaccuracies (did anyone catch the one about Rabbits?) and the continuing reference to David being bored with his website. I think its pretty obvious that all the work on INLAND EMPIRE has shifted focus away from dl.com in the last couple of years. I bet that after all the promo and distribution is done, dl.com will start being updated again.

Other than that its one of the better articles Ive read and it was great to have a really positive review of IE by British press.

The interview was a bit run-of-the-mill, which is a shame but I suppose there is only so much you can ask David Lynch!
