I just heard the podcast with the Absurda guy who works with Lynch and deals with the distribution of his work and so on, and he mentioned that the IE dvd will be sold at Davidlynch.com, but it wasnt clear to me whether it will be sold exclusively through this particular venue or not. I ask this because it would be much easier for me to buy the dvd from a regular retailer, which would exclude me from having to pay custom fees. When you buy a dvd from DL.com, or from Amazon for that matter, you are considered the importer, thus subjected to high custom fees, which in Brazil, where I live, are of 60% of the disc price + s&h (!) So you can imagine that for foreign buyers that would hit hard on the pocket, UNLESS the movie is made available for download, providing that it will be the same quality as the dvd, which I doubt. And of course, I would want the physical media anyways. In either case, I will buy the movie, which unfortunatelly will be the only way I´ll be able to see it I guess, and I have to start saving some money. But it would nice to spare a few so i could then buy the DL.com compilation dvd and such. Unless of course, someone would be kind enough just to give me a copy of the IE dvd when it´s out. I´ve been a real good boy this past year so who knows... Maybe Jingle Dell will left it on my doorstep. That would sure be a good deal.

If the movie comes out in your country, then the distributin company will publish the dvd, not David Lynch. Lynch cannot control the distribution of IE's dvd of each country in the world!

I implied that I´m interested in knowing about the American release of the DVD, the one 518 Media and Absurda will put out. The local dvd companies usually release crappy copies, terrible images, no extras and so on, unless they´re big studio dvds. For example, if you´re Spanish, there´s a terrible Eraserhead release by a local company there and that´s it. Would you not be interested in buying the DL.com copy instead?

The import duties on davidlynch.com DVDs shipped to the UK cost between £15.00 and £25.00 (roughly $30-50.00) on top of expedited shipping. The Subversive Cinema editions of Eraserhead and The Short Films are available via Amazon UK and are identical to the DL.com discs but come in standard plastic cases. INLAND EMPIRE will most likely follow the same trend and be released as a DL.com exclusive then as a standard R1 DVD distributed by Subversive Cinema. If you wait for the second edition it'll be cheaper and you (probably) won't have to pay import duties. I love my davidlynch.com DVDs but can understand why people would opt for the cheaper Subversive Cinema editions (I ended up buying both). It all depends how badly you want the big box and booklet!

And as for a R2 release, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Unless MK2 pick it up... They seem very pro-Lynch. They've produced special editions of Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway which were subsequently picked up by companies throughout Europe. The UK Cinema Club releases of Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway are identical to the MK2 discs. I'm guessing the UK special edition of Mulholland Drive will be the same as the French MK2 edition.

I agree the Eraserhead booklet's more useful than the one that comes with The Short Films but the packaging for TSF is (very, very) beautiful and you just don't get that with the Subversive Cinema disc. When my copy of Eraserhead arrived the card sleeve that holds the disc had come away from the box and the disc had got a bit scuffed but it gave it a charming, arts and crafts/cottage industry kind of feel haha. In the UK you can buy the Subversive Cinema discs via Amazon.co.uk for less than I paid in import duties alone for the davidlynch.com editions and I'm guessing it's the same throughout Europe

I can't wait to see INLAND EMPIRE. Given the lack of support from distributors it seems fitting that DL should manufacture and sell the DVD himself. DL hasn't compromised and that makes me feel good about the world. Having said that, it would be sad if this is how it's going to be from now on because the films aren't going to reach its target audience. Or anywhere outside the US for that matter. It also leaves DL open to piracy. I must have reported at least thirty DVD-R's of Eraserhead 2000 and The Short Films to Ebay UK. Neither disc is available on R2 and some people seem to think because something is 'rare' (in Ebay speak) they're doing the world a favour by running off DVD-R copies. If there isn't a R2 release people will be hawking copies of INLAND EMPIRE within days of its release.

Maybe DL could tour the world showing INLAND EMPIRE in a marquee and take money at the door? That would be amazing. I await those packets of David Lynch blend peanuts with bated breath!
