The answer to this may be brutally obvious, but....

Was the song 'Just You and I' written specifically for TP? The only version outside of TP that I can find is a cover performed by the Autumns. If not for TP, then who was the original artist?

Thanks

Well, a god awfully sublime song (and moment of the series - including Maddy's hallucination)!

Yes, it was written specifically for Twin Peaks.

Clearly, James Hurley is a nature enthusiast. I can't say that this fact speaks well of his qualities as a person, however fictional.

I like to keep my strolls under 30 minutes. Anything after that becomes a death march.

There is no band! And yet we hear a band. Or is it Bob playing the drums?

Is it available in a MIDI version? I'd like to embed it into my website. On every page.

I think so many people hate that song because of James castrati voice... I wonder what would have happened if Julee Cruise had sung it... I find the lyrics of "Mysteries of Love" just as silly and I love the song and the BV scenes with it, for example.

In my case I used to hate it (scene, song, voice) with passion, but now I appreciate it. The scene is excellent, how the three look at each other, Maddy's lust in her eyes (was BOB attracted to it?),... And it's disturbing that later James and Donna give Leland-BOB a tape they did of the song...

If I can tolerate the nightmarish Evelyn closeups (and in the sweetness of passing time I do) I certainly can with James singing...

His voice is so high on that song because it was sped up to match the key of the pre-recorded guitar track. Lynch had told him he could play his own backing, then someone threw the already completed track at him & he had to make do.  Some day James Marshall will record his version in his natural voice... (There's a joke in my TP: Live III episode about how James & Julee are going to sing Just You & I at Lucy & Andy's wedding. Julee says :" I'm trying to get him to sing it in a lower register. He sounds more like a girl than I do."    Julee was played by my drag queen pal Gene Kirk)

I found the Autumns version through inTunes...it's not amazing, since the song itself isn't amazing! However, it is far better than James' rendition...it's passable.

Well, but even if Bob was playing on the drums, then who was the sound engineer? There is some uncanny echo in this song. Or is it a keyboard/synth sound? (played by Eileen in the kitchen?)

Besides, I agree with Gordon, it's a good scene and the song - had it been sung by Julee - would be generally liked by everyone.

Someone mentions those Evelyn closeups and BOB1 inmediately shows up... You're obsessed man!

I was going to mention your love for them in my post, but I knew you'd have something to say...

The song works. It has this feeling of purity, innocence and youth in an almost surreal rendition because precisely of the eerie tone, and the effect suggests a dreamlike quality to it. Sure it can make you cringe if unprepared, but most of the show is like that, no? Furthermore it perfectly fits in the 'dark underbelly' aesthetics the creators had in mind. Think about what kind of dark feelings are happening at the same time this sickly sweet tune is played. Also it's true that DL has this thing for 50s memorabilia, obsolete stuff that come back in style. I feel like if it had been in the right key, it wouldn't be so intriguing somehow. It's as if James would like to take Laura's voice and sing with it to himself. The fact it's inane distracts us for a while from more serious preoccupations, only to show with violent contrast what this tomfoolery really hides and how it just summons evil in the end...

The sound wind makes through the pines. The sentience of animals. What we fear and what lies beyond the darkness.

Stripped of the vocals in that scene where James is posturing like James Dean in the Marsh garage, its a very cool tune.

That was a hilarious scene.... I was laughing through the next several scenes afterwards...

This came up again in another thread yesterday but I thought I would answer it here for continuity.

My view is that the "Just You and I" scene is played 75% for humour, a straight-up, fully-paid one-way ticket to Cheeseville and as that it is, indeed, very funny. But, as is so often with Lynch, a scene can play two or more emotions at once and serve more than one purpose. The secondary purpose of "Just You and I" is a visual exposition to show that Donna detects that there's a mutual attraction between James and Maddy.

So, in short, this is a perfectly good scene and if you accept it's obvious (to me at least) humorous intent then it's one of the shows highlights.

That's odd - it says there are 2 pages on this thread but page 2 is blank?  Weird...
