I've developed a burgeoning obsession with the city, and I'm hoping there are people here who can offer some personal insights to augment the internet stuff I've been reading...

[Not being an American citizen in no way diminishes my half-baked plan that I could eventually move there...]

It's a liberal town.

I have a friend who moved there some years back.  He is a defense attorney.  We argued about the guilt or innocence of cop killer Mumia abu Jamal once during a wedding reception.  He conceded Mumia probably did it but said he was a brilliant poet and writer.

Tom Leykis refers to it as Pork-land, Oregon on his radio show.  He does that to make a statement about the quality of the ladies there.

Myself, I've never been to Or-ee-gone but I've frequently flown over it.

Catherine Coulson lives in Oregon but not in Portland.

I know this was helpful, right, Jamie?

Visited friends in Portland for a weekend. I liked it. Reminded me a lot of Seattle.  It's home to Powell's, one of the greatest bookstores in existence: an entire city block. Check their site.  Catherine Coulson (& my ex-wife) both live in Ashland.

Chris, is your ex- "Dancing Girl" Leslie?  She and Brandon live in Ashland too, right?  I'll bet everyone knows everybody in Ashland, Oregon.  I'll bet there are a lot of trees there too.  Two less than there were last month before I bought my noble firs however.

Ummm... Former childhood home to Mark Rothko (1903-1970) between 1914 and 1923, famed Russian/American abstract expressionist painter, if I'm not mistaken.

Convergence 13, the annual grand gothic festival, will be held in Portland this year.

Back in '97 two of my friends got into trouble in Portland.  They stole a car and to make a long story short, one went to prison and the other was killed by a police officer.

Moral: if you're goin' to Portland in a car: rent, don't steal. (Especially if you're a goth prone to resisting arrest)
