Please, I need your help! In episode 9, when Donna is about to leave Mrs. Tremond´s house, the old lady says something I don´t understand. Does she say:

"They used to bring me hospital food. That Jeanette"?

.....or does she say:

"They used to bring me hospital food. Imagine that?"

I´m not sure if she says one thing or the other (or maybe none of the two). I haven´t got a good hearing and for me this two things sound phonetically very similar. I supposse "Imagine that" is not gramatically correct, or maybe it´s a shorter or more colloquial way of saying "(Can you) imagine that?" It would be interesting to be sure abot this....

 Thank you all!

I have just watched the scene again. As far as I can tell, Mrs Tremond says:

"They used to bring me hospital food. Imagine that!"

I think "Imagine that!" is a colloquial expression as you suggest, but more of an instruction than a question. In real life, people, when they speak, rarely talk with perfect grammar. I checked the original script, which says:

"They sent me hospital food. Can you imagine?"

which has pretty much the same meaning. So, I guess Mre Tremond dislikes ths hospital food as much as the other characters...

I've always heard "Jeanette", but...

Semiofftopic: Mrs. Tremond mentions in the script that her niece, a nurse, brought her the food from the hospital. Maybe she's that strange nurse that takes the Owl Ring from Annie's finger in the FWWM script...

Definitely "Imagine that!" (And as bonus info: in common English "Imagine that!" and "Can you imagine!" are functionally identical.)

That´s right, Gordon. In fact, I asked that question because I have always thought the same. I have checked the original script as well, and there was that mysterious mention about a nurse being Mrs. Tremond´s niece... I´ve imagined a whole theory about the mysterious Jeanette! but now I don´t know what to think... The source from I took the meaning of "That Jeanette" was the Spanish subtitles of the Spanish dvd edition of TP by Manga (and I supposse you took it from there too). But Manga subtitles can´t be based on the original script, as there´s no mention about the name of that nurse....And the funny thing is that the Spanish dub say "¿Se imagina?"

Maybe the only hope we have is to wait until Season 2 is released and check WTF the English subtitles say!

Thank you peakies!

Yes, I think you're right, I've read "Jeanette" in the subtitles from the Manga DVDs for years and now that's what I hear...

Those subtitles are fine, but yes, they have some mistakes. Right now I remember they didn't translate Bobby's "Kazoos" or Maddy saying "Aces" was translated to "Eres un as" (You are an ace).

But that's just the transcript. The person just thought she said that when he/she heard it. This is from the original script:

 TREMOND
My niece is a nurse. Sent me hospital food. Can you
imagine?

You can see it here: http://glastonberrygrove.net/texts/script9.html

I'm pretty sure that she says "Imagine that" based on this... plus that's what it sounds like to me.

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

Mangafilm's english subtitles says "that jeanette" too, but maybe they used that transcription I don't now.

You silly young boys and girls! I said "imagine that".

And what do you think about the change of my name in FWWM?

PS., Jeanette is my supermodel doppelganger.

This would look good on your wall.

I have watched the scene about 3 more times, listening very carefully, with my ear near the speaker, but I still think Mrs Tremond says:

"They brought me hospital food. Imagine that!"

I asked me mother what she thought the line was, and she agreed with me.

I´ve heard it again a lot of times too and I think you´re right, I think she says "Imagine that!" but still I don´t want to close the door completely for the other option.... I´d love Jeanette to exist! (I can´t deny it)

Maybe there's no Jeanette, but there's Jenny, the sexy perfume counter girl... And she's nekkid in WILD AT HEART!

As I mentioned above, I asked my mother to watch this scene, since I value her opinion on these matters. She said something very interesting: it reminded her of Little Red Riding Hood. Donna was the girl, visiting her "Grandmother" (Mrs Tremond), whose is actually the Wolf, disguised as her grandmother.

What does everyone else think of this? Is this significant? Does it stirke a chord?

The first part of the second season Region 2 is now on sale... And the subtitles in that scene say "That Jeanette" as well. I´m not saying they are correct because they maybe have translated the mistake in other languages... Anyway it´s still controversial... And now I´m one of those who thinks it sounds more like "Imagine that!".....

Maybe if Donna meets Mrs. T in the Lodge & wraps the red curtains around her head..." Oh, Gramma! What a creamy Garmonbozia you have!"

I love that people in this thread are suggesting that "Imagine that." is somehow grammatically incorrect or a colloquialism.  It's straight forward, correct English. I think we used to call it "you understood" to refer to the fact that the subject, thought it's not given, is understood to be the person being talked to.  It's like saying "Know what I mean?"

Yes, perhaps Donna will eventually go to the Black/White Lodge, and meet Mrs Tremond there. Mrs Tremond is like a wolf in old lady's clothing. Donna is an innocent young girl walking through the woods, with the food she has to deliver. Yes, Mrs Tremond could use the red curtains as a kind of shawl, or perhaps, she could make another shawl out of a red fabric, leaving the red curtains in tact. The red curtains must go on forever, or so it seems. The space of the "red room" seems to be infinite. You walk out of one room, and you enter yet another. Potentially, this could go on forever. But perhaps, there is a kind of "wrap-around" effect, where you walk out of the room one side and come into it again on the other. In this scenario, perhaps there is only one red room. But if that is the case, how could one account for the fact that different people seem to occupy the room at different times? There cannot be enough space for all of them at the same time. More plausible is the idea of an infinite series of interconnected rooms, thus allowing space for all of the dead and all the spirits.

That's interesting... it does seem like a pretty close parallel now that I think about it... Donna brings her food and everything. Lynch often borrows from children's stories... Mulholland Dr. and Wild At Heart (duh) borrow from Wizard of Oz, and Inland Empire has similarities to both Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz.

"Imagine that" - I'd bet my life on it.

It is part of the running gag in Twin Peaks that the hospital food will kill you faster than any injury or disease.....

Has he taken his eyes off it yet?
