Wonder how early he was out there???  I know my son drove by there this morning around 7 am.  It's a very very busy intersection just south of the Universal Studios and Hollywood Bowl; just north of the Kodak Theater, home of the Academy Awards show and American Idol; around the corner from the Magic Castle and a hop skip and a jump from Lynch headquarters. The Scientology Center on Hollywood Blvd. is not too far east but then again, so is Frederick's of Hollywood.  Thought you'd all like to get your bearings!

I'll be heading in the opposite direction in about an hour as I head off to Santa Monica.  Looks like I'll miss the cow who happens to look really cute.  Wonder how long it will take for PETA to get out there and protest?

But that cow has a head...

Was this cow in IE, or is David into exotic pets these days?  Or is it a maybe Hindu thing?

I don't remember any cows from INLAND EMPIRE.  Maybe David made a bid on the leftover assets from the Neverland Ranch.

Did he not do a piece of art concerning a cow at one point?? I seem to recall something....I think its something to do with that. I just love it though..that is genuinely hilarious. Name me another director who would sit by himself on the side of a busy street with a cow to promote his lead actress??

Someone should launch a huge Laura Dern for Oscar campaign...possibly involving a whole group of cows this time?? Her performance really is outstanding.

"Cheese is made from milk." Classic.

In the summer of 2001, I think, David was given a blank white fiberglas cow to paint for the "Cow Parade", a travelling art exhibition that was to kick off in New York. Peter Max did one, many other artists. Maybe a hundred in all. Anyway, PETA had wanted to submit one, but the Cow Parade people did not let them, because they wanted art, not political statements. Well, the cow got delivered and taken up to Dave's art studio, above the recording studio. After a while, I sort of felt a vibration in the studio, like a big machine. I went upstairs, and the head was lying on the ground, and Dave was sawing out a huge hole in the cow's back! He ended up painting some black spots on it, filling the hole with expanding sealer foam and painting a lot of red on it, and making a bloody stump where the head was. In the cut out body section, he put a lot of knives and forks stuck into it. On the sides he wrote; "Eat my Fear". Well, the thing showed up in New York, and the organizers did not know what to do with it. Some wanted it thrown out because they thought it was a political statement, and after all, PETA had been denied. BUT, the rules said that the artist could do ANYTHING they wanted with their cow. The Parade put the cow in a small side room, while the main cows adorned Broadway or something like that. The first afternoon, some little kid started crying when he saw Dave's cow, so they pulled it and stuck it in a storeroom. He never saw it again. I have heard it was uncovered a few years ago and is in an art museum in Scandinavia somewhere. Not sure. I took photos of it, and one was printed in Time magazine that Fall. The cover was Tiger Woods, if anybody wants to research it. If I find the photos, I'll post one here.

Is 'that bees bein the one' a line from the video of Lynch on YouTube? I can't access YouTube on this PC because I am in a public library you see.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but is there any meaning to Lynch's La Brea 'advertisment' for INLAND EMPIRE?

It's great that he's willing to do this though, as a form of publicity. That's what it's for after all, right?

Since he is distributing the film himself (if I am right on that one) then this form of publicity is needed really I suppose, presumably due to a limited budget for promotion.

But can anyone explain anything behind this malarkey or is it all pretty unexplainable? The cow business, for instance...?

Hello,

A few years ago, I published an article in Lynchland about David's sculpture. The article is quite long and is in french but, if the links are still correctly working for all the pages (tell me if they don't), you will see some photos in a detailed gallery at the end of the entire article.

Someone on IMDB mentioned that their friend went over to talk to Mr Lynch for a while and that he said he was planning to do this again "next week"..I guess that means this week by now. I dont know how much truth there is to this but if youre in the area then Im sure its worth keeping an eye out!

Is really Lynch distributing it by himself in the U.S.? That would be risky.

He is distributing it himself. Check out the article on dugpa.com. And, he does like cheese. tp3, the "Bees bein'" line is from a series on dl.com called "Out Yonder". I don't know if it is still up or not. It starred David and his son Austin.

As I rediscovered this thread and the links about cheese and IE, I was munching on a chunk of snow white goat cheddar and thinking about how great it was- so I wasn't surprised at all to read about anyone doing a tribute to cheese. The whole thing makes total sense.  This cheese in particular is awesome.  In fact, I have TP to thank for my recent love affair with Brie. Yum!

In Italy here BIM is going to distribute Inland Empire. I hope they keep the original full length version of the movie, so if any of you knows about the other distribution policies please let me know. BIM is the same italian company that  has distributed The Straight story, Cecil B. Demented, Amélie, Brokeback Mountain, Constant Gardener, Caché, 21 grams, Coffee and cigarettes, Motorcycle diaries, Farenheit 9/11 and Last Days. So I hope they keep being on that indie vibe. It is also distributing Short Bus right now...
