I tried to find a thread suitable for this as it's only a small question but I couldn't so... I've read in a couple of places (can't call them to hand right now) that Betty/Diane in MD is on drugs...Where is the reference to this in the film??? Either its subtle or I'm incredibly stupid and missing something obvious. I keep thinking about it and for the life of me can't remember any reference to it.

I'm sure it's just a theory. You can probably find it on that Lost on Mulholland site.

Maybe someone over-interpreted the "Don't drink all the Coke" line.

I think that's stretching it a bit but I can see where some folks might read that in the film. At the end, she is very pale, greasy and thin (especially the scene at Winkies with the hit man). And drugs are a usual side effect to the Hollywood lifestyle so it's possible but frankly, I don't see it.

If you turn the volume waaaay up at that part you can hear the little monkey in the background saying: "Judy said not to snort all the coke!"

In the mastubration scene, Diane's nose is incredibly red and sore looking. Also, the hitman scene shows a somewhat paranoid, on edge Diane.
This would look good on your wall. -Noah-

I wonder if the answer to this thread doesn't lie in past DL films...? In other words, how does the writer usually reveal that his character is on drugs? and... When his characters are taking drugs, does he let us know it? How?

We do not see Diane taking any drugs, then we can't say exactly if she is or not on drugs. One thing's for sure: in the finale, when she experiences those hallucinations, one with a lack of immagination and comprehension of the conditions a person can undergo after a failure and a crime subsequently committed can think those images are the result of an overdose reaction. Personally, I think it's just the power of her delusional mind that makes her that horrible joke of showing her the bum and then the elderly couple. But it's certain that a lot of people thought it was because Diane took drugs that everything ended up in that absurd way.
