Watched this today. I couldn't help but notice many similarities to Lynchian themes/motifs. In Lynch's hands it could have been a beautiful film but DePalma is only really good for a couple of nifty crane shots and some interesting violence. Do you think we will ever see a full on Lynch version of The Black Dahlia?

Really? I didn't notice any similarites. Sure, we had Principal Woljciek from Twin Peaks and Dan from Mulholland Dr. and it was a Hollywood noir, but the similarities end there. In fact it reminded me more of Sunset Blvd (especially the ending.)
Did you mean the constant smoking and the 'lookalike' plot point? I have a hard time calling elements of 50's noir Lynchian just because Lynch often applies them in his work. The term "Lynchian" was more or less officially defined by David Foster Wallace in A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again as "the unbelivably grotesque existing in a kind of unon with the unbelievably banal." Bottom line, we'll probably be waiting at least another five years to see another DL feature and I doubt he'll want to do something that's already been done.

No, I don't just mean the smoking/neo-noir angle. The "woman in trouble" aspect seems right up Lynch's alley. The whole seedy underbelly of Hollywood thing, even the main detective feels like a Lynchian hero...a mild mannered, Jefferey Beaumont-like young man who doesn't really do a whole lot other than take everything in, etc. I imagine you are right about the 5 years thing, unfortunately. I wish Lynch would have been given a shot to direct it though. I see the potential for it to be a Lynch film.

I have always felt that Jeffrey finding the ear had a sort of Black Dahlia vibe.
I don't think Lynch was inspired by it, but that's the feeling I get.

Well, I don't know what book DePalma's movie is based on, but a number of years ago, David was approached to do a film based on the book, "Severed", about The Black Dahlia. He really wanted to do it, and had been in contact some years ago with the then Detective on the case. But he wanted a different ending, saying that he knew who did it, and that the likely character in the book was not it. They wouldn't let him change it so did not go ahead with the project.
