In the INLAND EMPIRE thread a few posts were written about a Lynch boxset: lynched.skinned said that it would be smart of Universal to buy IE because it would make them able to release a Lynch boxset consisting of Dune, LH, MD and IE. JVSCant commented that it wouldn't be an era-balanced boxset and but still a decent one.

So, the question that I started to wonder is: what do you think would be an ideal Lynch boxset? Why? And what would it be a good set for? To have an era-balanced coherent set, or would the main cause for that particular set be to bring the most important movies easily accessible (heh) to audience yet unfamiliar with DL?

To start, I'd suggest a collection of three films: Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway and Blue Velvet. These three are alike in a lot of ways and they also happen to be my favourite films from DL, not having seen the IE yet. This I think would be an ideal introduction to Lynch as a remarkable filmmaker.

As a "mystery set", perhaps Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and INLAND EMPIRE would be a trio in order, or just a double edition of his first and latest film (which are in many ways close to each other - production time, production style, freedom of producers cutting down the length along with a lot of ideas so precious to Lynch etc.).

I consider Lynch to be at his greatest in Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks (episodes Pilot-14, 29), and Mulholland Dr. That's impossible though, and too skewed to one period, so probably Eraserhead, BV,  and MD would be best. Eraserhead is too scary and abstract for even my tastes (and I don't consider it nearly as highly as his later films, mostly because he was so inexperienced when he made it), but it's very representative of Lynch.

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

Homie's only got 9 proper movies, 10 if you count Industrial Symphony. I don't see why 10 discs couldn't fit in a box...

Very interesting question. My own pick would be: Eraserhead, EM, BV, MD, LH. I would definitely exclude Dune and would have to exclude TP because it is not 100% directed by DL. I think the  TP Pilot is amazing but it isn't stand alone so it could not be included. I can't comment on IE of course.

For a firsttime lynch experience:

Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive

To represent his growth:

Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Straight Story, Mulholland Drive

And an experiemental box set:

    Eraserhead, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive

This would look good on your wall.
