thanks for the info Mr Silencio, it does sound like a lot of work but I'm coming from the southern hemisphere to attend a wedding in Italy and I figured if I'm in the area I would kick myself for not making some kind of effort. So I'm there on the 6th, arrive on the 5th, and will be doing everything I can to see the movie because that would be a cool story to tell people! I didn't realise you could get a train onto Lido, I figured I'd have to get a water taxi from Venice Island. If I don't get to see it, well, I'll just enjoy walking around soaking up the atmosphere.

As a matter of fact, a "vaporetto" is something that floats on water eventually. I don't know... I've never visited Venice.

My friends, it's horrible. I drove to Venice after a whole day's work yesterday, got there about 11PM and crashed into bed, getting up early at 4am to stand in the line for the tickets. I met Iar and we waited about 3 hours, we were like 10th in line. And ... I missed out on the ticket. Iar got the last one. It's horrendous, and I don't know what to do now. They say the whole theatre is full and I just can't believe that, esp. since they said 300 tickets were going to be released to public. The only chance now I have, maybe is to wait until tomorrow and see if someone will try to sell tickets on the "black market". Or, if any of you reading this know people who can get me in somehow and can make a call, please, I will be in debt forever. My phone here is +38598397302, in case you have someone down here who can help. It seems I simply have no other way to get in. I'm writing this from the internet point in Lido, and I'm not sure when will I be able to check the board again. The screening is tomorrow at 6:30PM. Desperately, Igor

Oh, Igor, that is the crummiest possible story!!!! Somehow I believe it will work out for you before tomorrow! I wish there was something I could do but I have absolutely zero clout in Venice. Sounds like it was very unfair to have been 10th in line and for the festival to allow all those people to wait in line knowing they had only a few public tickets!!!!! (that wouldn't happen in the US and A) If it doesn't come to pass that you have a ticket before show time, I'd show up with Iar anyway. Early. Work that crowd. Work it from every angle. I still believe if there is any justice in the world, you will be in that theater in Venice on September 6 watching INLAND EMPIRE. XOXO, Susan

I don't think the 6.30 pm show is the only one. Anyway, I told you (and not only me) that Venice is like hell these days. Anyway, I hope you will manage to get in that theatre. Good luck! One curiosity: why do they say that Lynch has opened the doors for directors like Spike Lee or Jane Campion?! I can understand when they say Coen, Jarmusch and Tarantino. But why Lee and Campion?! I dont' see any resemblance of style.

Spike Lee and Jane Campion both make very personal films. I think it's referring to their attitude towards filmmaking?

Uh, ok. If the similarities consists in only being as independent as Lynch, ok. But, frankly, I don't think that Spike Lee is that "indie". I mean, every movie that he makes, especially the last one Inside man, here in Italy is seen as pure mainstream. It's been the n.1 movie in the top box office list of movies for about 3 weeks here. It ain't got the taste of the indipendent film at all, for me. It was quite interesting and entertaining, but not in that same frame of artistic conception of film-making as someone like Lynch or Joel Coen can work in. Do you understand what I mean?

Here are the latest news: 18:30 SALA GRANDE Golden Lion assignment for career to David Lynch
following OUT OF COMPETITION INLAND EMPIRE by David Lynch (Usa, 172 min., original version. subtitled in Italian) with Laura Dern, Jeremy Irons, Justin Theroux, Julia Ormond.
From what I know, this is the official premiere. So, every information given by critics and/or people concerning the film are not to be taken too seriously because the only way they could have watched the film can only be a private screening... The movie premieres during the sunset.

But a film can be personal and independent and still be successful. The article said DL opened the door for Spike Lee - Lee's been making films since 1980 and a lot can change in that time (like budgets, for example). His earlier films had a very indie feel to them. He's never been mainstream (or even very popular) in the UK.

Okay, now the mystery is solved: "I primi ad aver potuto ammirare il nuovo capolavoro del celebre cineasta che giunge a cinque anni dal meraviglioso Mulholland Drive sono stati i possessori dell'accredito daily press, ovvero gli "eletti", coloro che portano al collo l'ambito pass di colore rosso. Quest'anno, per evitare i fischi in sala al termine delle proiezioni, gli organizzatori della kermesse veneziana hanno ben pensato di fare una distinzione tra i raffinati e i buzzurri, senza tener conto del fatto che sono proprio i giornalisti più "qualificati" ad esprimere il loro dissenso - forti del proprio nome e della propria testata - attraverso questa pratica da stadio." from Mymovies.it , official italian website, in a way related to the american IMDB, that follows every news from the Lagoon festival The article says: the only people who have watched Inland Empire until now, today, were the ones who own the daily press credit. That is, "the selected ones", the ones who wear the much envied red pass around their neck. This year, in order to avoid the bothersome boos in the screening room at the end of the show, the venetian kermesse organizers have smartly figured out to make a distinction between the fine and the churlish (uncultured). But they ingenuously ignored that the most qualified writers and reviewers are the ones who express the strongest objections on movies. The writer describes this practice of distinctions similar to that one we use when we come together in the stadiums, where good people go there just to enjoy the game but also rough hooligans are prepared to set everything on fire.

Well, I don't know Lee so much. The only films I've watched are Malcolm X, He Got Game and Inside Man.

On IMDB there are some candid pictures taken yesterday at the Venice Festival, featuring David Lynch, Laura Dern and Justin Theroux. Jeremy Irons was also present. I know this because there was a report on our national Italian newscast showing them together, then some images from the cerimony of the Golden Lion to Lynch's career assignment. Then a brief interview with him. I found him lively and ironic as always. I just can't wait to see Inland Empire.
