Ok, I watched both series' of Twin Peaks quite recently and am now a huge fan. =D I'd like to know which film of David Lynch's you suggest I watch next. My sister's boyfriend seems to think that Mulholland Drive is a good film to watch now. Whilst I do want to watch that, I'm not sure whether I should watch anything else first.

Your thoughts?

i hope you are implying you already watched fwwm. if not, watch that.

but quite honestly, every david lynch movie is great in its own way. but i would say personally that some are different than others. if you are into the feel of twin peaks (small town, 50's elements, mystery) then you would want to go with blue velvet as there are very huge similarities between it and tp.

if you are into the elements of darkness, abstraction, phychology, the human condition, surrealism, the irrational, etc. (which i am most of all inclined to in dl's body of work), see lost highway, mulholland drive and eraserhead.

the only features really left are elephant man, dune and the straight story. i think the elephant man is an okay film, but very straight forward, which can be good. there are some great visuals in it too, but not the best of dl. i couldn't get into dune but if you're a sci-fi fan go for it. i haven't seen the straight story so i can't tell you about that.

i sure wish i was in your position right now. the first experience of a lynch film is always the best and extremely enlightening. you have got some incredible cinematic experiences coming your way!

Interesting. I guess I'll have to see every film because I'm interested in Lynch's take on all those different features. I'm not a huge fan of any of them, but Lynch's depiction is beautiful, so I'm sure I'll see every film eventually. I may aswell just rent Mulholland Drive off my sister's boyfriend then.

PS. Yeah I have seen FWWM.

 Boy that's so true.

I really envy you.  There's nothing like experiencing a DL film for the first time.  I suppose that's why we are all so psychotic with regard to IE.  Well, sorry...why I'M so psychotic about it, can't speak for others.  I just have this morbid fear that I'll call the Kubrick Syndrome...

I waited so darn long for Eyes Wide Shut and then he died.  POOF...no more Kubrick stuff...

I worry about that with DL, even more because DL is miles above any other director, IMHO, living or dead.  I experienced this Kubrick Syndrome while waiting for Mulholland Drive, as well.

Eat your veggies, Dave.  And let's hope there's something to that Unified Field.

Oh, btw, my recommendation is toss Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, and Eraserhead into a hat on little strips of paper...

 ...and pull out Mulholland Drive.

I've seen all of his work (numerous times, too numerous for sanity; like my daughter when she was little with her Srawbah-bah-bah-bah-berry Shortcake videos, yeesh) and The Straight Story and Elephant Man are "straight stories", good films nonetheless...and I especially liked the sprinkler at night scene in The Straight Story...and Dune was...well...not a true DL, even he'll tell ya that...

yes, my apologies. i keep forgetting wild at heart which is a spectacular film. i guess it happens because i keep thinking of time periods with lynch films and wild at heart is right in the middle of tp series and fwwm when i always see tp series and fwwm side py side. wild at heart is probably the best non lynch written film (please save your "but it's based on" comments, i know that. i still consider an adaptation something that isn't WRITTEN BY...)

And while you're working on memory problems, don't forget to watch The Straight Story, a wonderful film (great Angelo score), Oscar nom for it's star & the only Lynch film with old friend Sissy Spacek.

Ahhh, today I've watched 2.

Beautiful.

Mulholland Drive was absolutely great... confusing at first but I get it perfectly now. Not too confusing of a story-line. Directed and written really well.

Eraserhead... very long drawn out... yet like a painting. The most odd film I've ever watched however! I can see why it's a cult classic. Don't get that one's story line at all though!

Eraserhead is about a young man who fears fatherhood and feels like he's lost control over his life.  He has fantasies, but they go wrong (like Fred in Lost Highway.)
