Here are what people have to say on Netflix: 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful. If you hope to see some interesting footage that ended up in the editing room trash bin instead of in the theatrical release, you will be disappointed. Instead you will see what the movie looked like before the editor went to rehab and sobered up. Identical scenes repeated as reminders of previous plot line, but without the special effects added in, snippets of scenes that added nothing and were so bad the actors looked like they were in pain having to do them. At the same time, some good scenes that worked very well in the theatrical release were cut altogether from the extended version. In short, if you liked the theatrical version, but thought it could be improved with better editing, be content. Unless you want to experience just how bad Dune could have been, don't waste your time with the extended version. 50 out of 69 people found this review helpful. What a big disappointment! I saw this film in theatre on original release long time ago when I was young. I was mesmerized by this film, so much that I went on to read the book series after viewing the film, and it changed my life./ This "extended" edition is so bad on adaptation from film to DVD it's making me angry. An EPIC film like this!/ First of all, I thought by "extended" it means only put more films into DVD than original release, but it's a lie! They CUT out some scenes out of the original, and I am sure of it because I remember vividly those scenes even today, 20 years later! to last this long time you must understand the impact of those scenes./ Second problem is the incredibly BAD sound track adaptation from film to DVD. It's so bad it feel like the DVD version is a copy you shoot using a hand held camera from a movie theatre. It's THAT bad./ I could go on and on but it's all bad. I should have given it 2 or 1 star for this farce of DVD, but I love the film (original) so much... If you saw the original, rent this and join me being angry. If you never saw the original... try rent the NOT "extended" version... 132 out of 159 people found this review helpful. Don't be fooled into thinking this version of "Dune" was approved by David Lynch--he had his name removed and the director credit is "Alan Smithee". Lynch's version was certainly no masterpiece, but this version is a completely incomprehensible abomination. The producers seem to have taken everything Lynch left on the cutting room floor and thrown it into the movie in what appears to be random order. Lynch left this mess behind and went on to make "Blue Velvet", the first of his several masterpieces. The original is worth seeing if you can find it, but this version should be avoided at all costs.
